May 31, 2006

Dear Saints Of Andrew:
THIS SUNDAY June 4, 2006
8:00, 9:15 & 10:45 PENTECOST SUNDAY
Nancy preaching She encourages us to wear red and yellow! The service will include a report on the “Sharing, Growing, Changing Lives”campaign.

*After church this Sunday, Nancy and I are going to take off for the better partof two weeks. Our itinerary has been shaped by two Annual Conferences of theUnited Methodist Church. (An Annual Conference is the yearly meeting of an area’s pastors and lay delegates.) On Friday evening, June 9, the Missouri Conference, meeting in Springfield, will be holding its memorial service. My father, the Reverend Richard Davis, who passed away in September, will be among those remembered, and it feels right and good that we should be there. We’ll hit Springfield via Missouri stops in Kansas City (Nancy’s sister), St. Louis(the new ball park) and Cape Girardeau (Nancy’s father.) Leaving Springfield,we’ll angle up through Kansas, with stops in Dodge City and Holcomb, reentering Nebraska at McCook. We’ll wander around western Nebraska for a couple of days, then land in Kearney for the Nebraska Annual Conference. The four day meeting ends on Saturday, June 17. I’ll be back in the pulpit on the 18th with “The DaVinci Sermon.” There is irony here. Living in Springfield, I was among those lobbying for the Annual Conference to move from Columbia, in the middle of the state, down to theOzarks--in part so I wouldn’t have to leave home. This is the first year of thenew arrangement. It would be vastly more convenient for my purposes, now, if the meeting was in the middle of the state! Oh well. In our absence, on the 11th, Michael Patzloff will be preaching. Nancy and I have come to appreciate Michael so very much. He is himself an ordained clergymember of the Nebraska Annual Conference. Probably no one at St. Andrew’s was going to be more directly impacted by the appointment of a clergy couple thanMichael. But Michael has made the adjustment with grace and kindness. Michael’s current job description has a heavy focus on ministry to youth, but Michael is in fact involved in a wide of ministries at St. Andrew’s. We were pleased at his enthusiasm for leading the new 5:00 Saturday evening services. I know you’ll be blessed by his message on June 11. Given the time frames we’re working under, “The Da Vinci Sermon” needs to befinished before we leave. I am having a lot of fun with this one and encourageyou to be part of what should be a memorable morning on June 18.

*John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15 Jesus said to his disciples, "When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to youfrom the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testifyon my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from thebeginning. "I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But, now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, `Where are you going?' But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me;about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me nolonger; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned."I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When theSpirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will notspeak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to youthe things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what ismine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason Isaid that he will take what is mine and declare it to you."
