North of Baltimore

Dear Saints Of Andrew:

I left our nation’s capital a little after six this morning, hoping to be north of Baltimore before rush hour. Having met my driving goal, I saw an exit with a Panera’s sign. The regular brew here is much stronger than what I regularly imbibe in Omaha, and they wanted to toast my chocolate chip bagel--though happily, I stopped them in time.

*

My time in D.C. was a contrast in size: The Iwo Jima Memorial and original Star-Spangled banner were both much larger than I had imagined; in contrast, I had a hard time grasping the idea that an instrument as diminutive as the derringer in the case beneath Ford’s Theatre could have taken the life of so great a man as Abraham Lincoln.

*

I spent the last two nights in a Motel 6 on the west edge of D.C. The plan was to park at a Metro Station and then ride the train into the city. It cost $3.50 to park, at the station, which wasn’t so bad, BUT you had to buy a card to exit the garage and the card cost $10. I figured I could ride on the other $6.50. Wrong. The card itself cost $5, leaving a scant $1.50 for actual fare. At least I could apply the $1.50 to the cost of a $6.50 day pass, right? Wrong again. Which meant I paid ten bucks for parking posted at $3.50.

*

Few tears will likely be shed when the Nationals leave RFK Stadium for their new ballpark, scheduled to open in 2008. According to the papers, the mayor and team owners are still fussing over financial details, but the way the mayor rips people off for parking, he ought to some money to spend. It’s always fun being in a major league ballpark, even in RFK only marginally fits that description.

*

PASTOR CHARLOTTE asks: Prayers for Emilio, recently diagnosed with leukemia (8 year old grandson of Chris L.’s cousin). Prayers for Teresa M., undergoing tests. Prayers for an 18year-old special needs man, who has developed an infection in his system that has been life-threatening (Ron W.’s employee’s son).

*

This is from MADONNA S.: Dave and I ask for yours and the congregation's prayers for my sister, Mardell Andersen, who needs a suitable donor for a kidney transplant. She has been undergoing kidney dialysis 3 times/week for about 1 1/2 years and is "on the list" for a donated kidney, but we understand there are never enough. There is no immediate family member that is an option for a kidney donation.

*
Best get back on the road to Philadelphia. I know it’s going to be a big weekend at St. Andrew’s, celebrating Michael Patzloff’s ministry. Even if you yourself don't know Michael well, you'll surely be blessed by his message. God bless, BRD

Crossing the Delaware

Dear Saints Of Andrew:

First, let me welcome new readers to A-MAIL. We hope you enjoy these epistles. If you ever want off the list, just let us know.
*
Our newest members are:

JEFF & MARY A.

& CHARLES E.

We love receiving new members and if you’re interested, please consider attending our next PIZZA WITH THE PASTORS, August 13, 5:00-6:30. You can sign up in the Rotunda this Sunday or by return e-mail.
*
On Sunday morning, July 23, I made the following announcements to the congregation: 1) The Capital Funds Campaign has passed the 2.6 million dollar mark in commitments. 2) We’ve already paid down almost $200,000 in principle. 3) This week, an auditing firm is conducting what is called a “Procedures Audit,” to ensure we have the proper accounting in place to be optimal stewards of your generous contributions.
*
I leave tomorrow for my annual history/baseball tour. This year’s planned stops include Gettysburg, Washington’s Crossing State Park outside Trenton New Jersey, Ford’s Theatre, the Smithsonian National History Museum, and ball games in D.C., Philadelphia, Baltimore and Yankee Stadium.

*
Here’s what’s coming up at St. Andrew’s.

This Sunday, July 30, is PASTOR MICHAEL'S last SUNDAY. Michael, who has served as associate pastor at St. Andrew’s, with particular responsibility in youth ministry, is being appointed as Lead Pastor at Hanscom Park UMC, here in Omaha. Michael will be preaching each of the weekend services. At noon on Sunday, we will honor him with a luncheon/roast.

Nancy is in the pulpit on August 6, with a sermon on the B-I-B-L-E.

I’ve got the 13th: “GRASSLANDS”; my text will be Psalm 90.

On August 20, we’ll be sharing A GREAT MORNING OF CHRISTIAN MUSIC, featuring some of the massive musical talent at St. Andrew’s. On August 27, I’ve got a high-flying message planned: “SUPERMAN IS A METHODIST.”

Nancy brings the message on Labor Day weekend.
STEPPING UP SUNDAY is September 10. Stepping Up Sunday is always a big deal at St. Andrew’s, as we kick off the new season in the church school. Once again, we’ll have a drum corps to lead the children to their classes. The Sanctifications and I are working on “LIGHT MY FIRE.”
*
As part of Stepping Up Weekend, on Friday evening, September 8, we’ll be holding the FIRST ANNUAL ST. ANDREW’S TRIVIA NIGHT. This is something Nancy and I have done in other places, with good success. We’ll have ten categories of ten questions each. People are seated at tables (you can bring a team of up to eight persons, or we’ll assign you a table/team when you get there). After each question, the table confers, settling on a single answer, written on an answer sheet. After each category, the sheets are collected, with a tally kept. This is a low-key fun and fellowship event. We’ll start at 7:00. There will be pop corn, sodas and such for refreshments. Five bucks a head ought to cover costs.
*
I’m looking forward to another GUYS BIBLE STUDY. On the four Monday evenings in August, we’ll be covering the Gospel According to Mark. We’ll meet in the Prayer Chapel (Room 101), 6:30-7:45. All guys are welcome to attend. It’s a BYOB affair (Bring Your Own Bible.)

PASTOR CHARLOTTE asks: Prayers for John J., preparing for surgery on July 25th. Prayers for Inez P., experiencing serious health issues (Joanne C.’s mother). Prayers for Norma H., ill with pneumonia (Richard H.’s mother).
*
PSALM 23: The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures and leads me beside still waters. He revives my soul and guides me along right pathways for his Name's sake. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; you have anointed my head with oil, and my cup is running over. Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
COMMENTARY: I hope the beloved Psalm sounds as happy to you this morning as it sounds to me. It was right about a year ago now that Bishop Ann B. Sherer was calling Nancy in Springfield, Missouri (a Friday morning, if I remember correctly), asking if we’d ever considered living in Omaha. Huh. I am so thankful the Lord has brought us to the very green pasture of St. Andrew’s UMC. If the waters have not always been still since we arrived in mid-September, they have been ceaselessly interesting and very gratifying. There is much goodness and mercy to be celebrated. It’s a joy to share this ministry with you.

High School Musical

Dear Saints Of Andrew:

I’d be interested in hearing how the “This Sunday” announcement I sent out on Wednesday came through on your computer screen. It was sent from here centered in bold Cooper font. How did it look on your end?

The Sanctifications will be with us; Craig B. will bring the offertory.

We’ll be inviting you to drop by a Disciple Bible Study Information Session.

We’ll be making the initial announcement about the annual Dinner/Auction.
There's a lot going on this Sunday at St. Andrew's!

The 5:00 Summer Saturday Evening Service will conclude at the end of July. We had built the service around Pastor Michael; with Michael going to Hanscom Park at the end of July, we’ve decided to pull the proverbial plug. That said, we’ve been very pleased at the response to the Saturday evening option. At some point, we’ll surely be doing some surveying of the congregation relative to optimum worship times. For instance, the more “traditional” service at St. Andrew’s was originally held circa 10:45. As the contemporary service outgrew the Family Life Center, it was decided to do a second contemporary service at 10:45, moving the “traditional” service to 8:00. Given that we’re now in a 900 seat sanctuary, would it make sense to revisit that issue, and perhaps consider moving the more “traditional” service back to its original slot? What effect would that have on the people now worshiping at 10:45. Would the 8:00 regulars WANT to move back to 10:45? These are some of the things we’re thinking about. There are a plethora of mix-and-match possibilities. I mention it here only because there have been some very preliminary discussions and I wouldn’t want anyone to get wind of rumors and run with them, as if decisions have already been made. Before any decisions are made, IF any decisions are made, there will be ample opportunity for input and comment.
*
I opened “Newsweek” yesterday, and there was a big color picture of Lucas Grabeel. It appears Lucas has become something of a star, including a leading role in the Disney cable phenomena, “High School Musical.” I knew Lucas had gone to L.A. seeking fortune and fame, but this is impressive. His official fan site notes that, once upon a time, Lucas played drums in a church band. That was in fact the band at Campbell United Methodist Church in Springfield, Missouri. Lucas wasn’t a member of the congregation, but had been drawn in by our brilliant young leader/pianist Susan Marek. If Springfield's Brad Pitt is too occupied with Angelina Jolie to make my book (“We’re Dead, Come On In,” available for purchase in book stores and by mail order at Amazon) into a movie, maybe I can interest Lucas. Now I’m thinking maybe I have shouldn’t have ragged him so much about wearing shoes.

Ephesians 2:11-22
Remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called "the uncircumcision" by those who are called "the circumcision" -- a physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands-- remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God.
*
COMMENTARY: Paul was a Jew on a mission to bring Christ to Gentiles--a Gentile defined as everyone who was NOT a Jew. Paul had been raised as a Jew in the predominately Gentile/Greek-acculturated community of Tarsus in Asia Minor. Paul saw the historic divisions and hostilities between Jew and Gentile as nothing short of tragic. In offering Christ to both Gentile and Jew, he visioned the breaking down of dividing walls, two people becoming one in love. I can only imagine what he’d think about what’s going on in the today. I’m pretty sure of this: he would be in deep mourning. And even more sure of this: he would be offering Christ’s reconciling love to both Arab and Jew.

No, Andrew, not that… The only reason I’m up here this early is that one of our members e-mailed me at Panera’s suggesting I might want to go up and see the youth off. That seemed like an excellent idea. Not knowing what time the youth were leaving, I finished my coffee and headed this way, arriving about 8:15, to find the youth had left at 7:30. At that point, it was just Andrew, Cami and me. Cami has left, Netta’s not here yet to pick up the dog, so we’re down to me and Andrew, and now this happens…
I can’t take him outside, for fear he’ll run away. I look out my window just now and see Heather Doll arriving. Praise the Lord for reinforcements.

Psalm 24

The earth is the LORD'S and all that is in it, the world and all who dwell therein. For it is he who founded it upon the seas and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep. Who can ascend the hill of the LORD? and who can stand in his holy place? Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, who have not pledged themselves to falsehood, nor sworn by what is a fraud. They shall receive a blessing from the LORD and a just reward from the God of their salvation. Such is the generation of those who seek him, of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is he, this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory.

Commentary: I wonder if Martin Luther ever tried to make cogent commentary under these circumstances. Try this: Like Andrew the puppy, each of us has a master. Christians know our master as Jesus the Christ. When we are separated from our master, we are prone to anxiety that we perhaps cannot name but can cause us to make puddles of our lives. That’s all from here.

Nancy preaches on an issue that has surely touched every family in this congregation, at one level or another:

“DIVORCE.”

With Pastor Michael away on the Youth Mission Trip this weekend, Rev. Charlotte will be preaching the 5:00 Saturday evening service. We’ve been very pleased with the response to the Saturday evening worship opportunity. As it was originally designed around Michael, we’ve decided to end the series at the end of July. This does not preclude the possibility of bringing it back next summer, or, for that matter, eventually making it a year round worship option at St. Andrew’s.

*

Does anyone in A-Mail land have a copy of “Napoleon Dynamite” that I could borrow through the 23rd of this month?

*

The All-Star game is always fun. I was in the Pittsburgh ball park two summers ago; it's one of my favorites. Particularly cool is the experience of walking from downtown Pittsburgh, across the bridge spanning the river, over to the stadium. It’s just a shame the Pirates are so crummy. My annual baseball/history trip commences two weeks from today, with stops in Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Trenton (I’m particularly interested in the place where Washington crossed the Delaware River), Yankee Stadium, Gettysburg and Baltimore .

PASTOR CHARLOTTE asks: Prayers for Zach G., who has completed the high risk treatments; pray for healing of the ITP. Prayers for Dr. John and Wendy L., traveling to Germany on July 22nd, returning on August 8th; pray for traveling mercies and a good visit with his mother, who is ill.

We ask your prayers on our Youth Ministry Task Force: Deb H. and Nate U. from the Staff-Parish Committee, Youth Parents C. Roberts and Nancy B., and, from the youth group itself, Erin C. and Trevor T., as they endeavor to discern God’s will for what happens next with our Ministry To Youth. Your prayer might look something like this: “Lord, we ask you lift up the right person for this ministry, and to give us grace to recognize the person you have lifted up.”

*

Amos 7:7-9

This is what the Lord God showed me: the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. And the LORD said to me, "Amos, what do you see?" And I said, "A plumb line." Then the Lord said, "See, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people ; I will never again pass them by; the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword."

COMMENTARY: When I was serving First United Methodist in St. Joseph, Missouri, Dr. James A. Simpson and I had a weekly radio show we called “Plumb line,” per this verse from Amos. A plumb line is a measuring tool. Both the people and nation of were to be measured by the plumb line of the Lord’s righteousness. Amos was particularly concerned about the morality or lack thereof in a culture that practiced conspicuous consumption and devoted many energies to pleasure, while others were mired in hopeless poverty. It’s a fascinating book, not very long, inviting each reader to ask: "If the Lord were to measure me today, by the straight edge of the plumb line, how would I line up?"

PASTOR NANCY writes: Just to let you know a little about how we stand at this time in our search for a new Youth Director. The Staff-Parish Relations Committee, which will ultimately make the hiring decision for this position, has appointed a Task Force to process applications and make recommendations. Currently we have received three applications. I have talked with each of these people and found them all to have many of the gifts and graces that a Youth Director would require. The Task Force met last night to consider those applications. We are all hopeful that we will have a new person in place soon because we are aware that the new school year is beginning and we need to have an organized youth group with a leader at that time. Whether that will happen exactly in that way is impossible to know as of this date. But I will be working with Michael as he puts together a schedule for youth programming for the fall. We will need assistance from members of the congregation, and most particularly the youth parents, until this process is complete and we have our new director. I also ask all of you to pray that God will send us the person we most need for this ministry.

Just a word I would like to say about Michael. Bruce and I have been so grateful that Michael was here when we came last September. He has always been extremely helpful to us and truly helped us to make a smooth transition here at St. Andrew’s. We are both excited and thrilled that he has received a wonderful new opportunity to serve as lead pastor of another congregation. Of course, we would have enjoyed having him stay, but he has been recognized and offered an excellent new opportunity. I know all of you join me and Bruce in wishing him well and send him off with our love. Don’t forget that we will have a special Sunday to recognize Michael on July 30, with a luncheon after the 10:45 service that morning, followed by a “celebrity roast” of Michael. Watch for more details on this special event.

*

KELLY M. TELLS US ABOUT SOME OF THOSE DETAILS:

The Staff Parish Relations Committee is planning a luncheon for Pastor Michael on July 30th, his last Sunday at St. Andrew's. It will begin immediately following the 10:45 service and will go until about 2:00. We'll be catering lunch and asking for "good will" donations to help offset the cost of the luncheon. This will be something you won't want to miss since our lunch is not the only thing that will be "ROASTED" on Sunday...Yes we're planning a very special roasting of Pastor Michael as well as a heart felt send off and congratulations celebration. We hope you all can be there to help make it a memorable event!

MORE FROM : REBUTTAL TO THE “DOGS” SERMON

I feel it necessary, in the spirit of truth, to tell you what really happened on that morning at the Clutter home outside Holcomb, Kansas. Bruce often wants to make little side trips like this when we are on vacation so I have gotten used to doing these things. It is true that earlier that morning he was stopped for speeding. This was especially hilarious since he rarely drives above 50 miles per hour even on an interstate highway. I am the one who drives too fast most of the time and so the irony of this situation was priceless. It is true that when we got to the Clutter farm there was a large NO TRESPASSING sign at the entrance to the lane leading to the house. It is true that I obeyed that sign and drove no further. It is true that Bruce got out of the car and walked onto the posted property toward the house. The rest of the story (as Paul Harvey would say) is a little different. I was sitting in the car under a shade tree with the windows down, enjoying myself, watching this trespasser walk further down the lane. At one point, just as he was getting out of my sight I saw him turn around and begin to STROLL back toward the car. At first I just assumed that he had done whatever it was he wanted to do and was simply returning. Then I saw that several paces behind him there was a large dog, also STROLLING along the lane. The dog could not have appeared less threatening. It was the perfect picture of a man and his dog out for a STROLL on a beautiful Sunday morning. They continued in this manner all the way to the car. At no time did it appear that this dog was “just short of Bruce’s throat”, unless twenty or thirty feet is your definition of “just short”. Bruce got in the car, the dog sat down and watched us leave and then he turned and went back down the lane. I have not heard the end of it since.

Ephesians 1:3-14

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and insight he has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's own people, to the praise of his glory.

COMMENTARY: This is among the passages that inspired John Calvin, back in the Reformation era, to preach and teach the doctrine of predestination. When I encounter a Presbyterian who is visiting our church, I'm likely to say, “It’s clear you were predestined to join St. Andrew’s!” Methodists fall on the free will side of the ledger. I’ve heard people try to straddle the two ideas this way: Suppose a lover sends you a box of chocolates. You were destined to receive the chocolates. But you still have to decide to open and taste. If you don’t like the chocolates analogy, try this: The Lord has chosen you for salvation. What are you going to do about it?

Central America

Dear Saints Of Andrew:

This Sunday, July 9, I have a sermon called, “DOGS.” The genesis was an interesting encounter with a canine last month in Holcomb, Kansas. Among other scripture, I'll be talking about Jesus' encounter with a Canaanite woman, as told in Matthew 15:21-28. The Ladies Ensemble will be featured in all three services. Gene W. is bringing her therapy dog, BOOMER, to the 9:15 & 10:45 Children’s Moments. I'm looking forward to it.

*

Several of our members are headed off for Central America in the next week or so. LARRY A. will be going to Nicaragua with the Rainbow Network, a ministry some of you have heard me talk about. DENNY H. and STEVE B. will be in Panama. Denny sent the following that I want to pass along to you:

Steve B. and I are really excited about the July project to the Chiriqui Province. It is great that the Methodist Church is taking the lead to improve education in this depressed, rural area of Panama. Our project will provide the classrooms for continuing and adult education. The teachers are provided by the Methodist school in Panama City (one of the biggest and oldest in Panama). Our personal ties with Rev. Secundino Morales, the NE Central District Superintendent and former Methodist Bishop of , Panama are invaluable in this mission endeavor. Secundino grew up in the Chiriqui Province (his parent are still living there). He has led every group from NE since 1999. This will be my fifth mission trip to and Steve’s second. “That in all things God may be glorified.” Thanks for all the support!

*

For those wondering how a trip like this works, all of the above are paying their own way. St. Andrew’s is making a budgeted financial contribution to construction costs in Panama.

*

PASTOR CHARLOTTE asks: Prayers for Esther, recovering from foot surgery (Carol O.’s mother; Curtis O.’s grandmother).

Charlotte also passes along the following: “THANKS A BUNCH! To the church, from Anna S.: Thank you for all your prayers.”

Mark 6:1-6

Jesus left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, "Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him. Then Jesus said to them, "Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house." And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief.

COMMENTARY: It is said that familiarity breeds contempt. People in Jesus’ hometown saw him, not as the messiah/healer, but as the local carpenter’s boy, with the result that he could not do much good in their midst. Do you ever worry (I do) that having known Jesus, or at least known OF Jesus all these years, some of us may have grown almost TOO familiar with him? We think of ourselves as Jesus’ kin, of his own house, but in Mark’s telling, it was among these that he could do the least! I look at the way the United Methodist Church is growing in places like Africa and South Korea, where the message of Jesus is new, and people are clamoring to meet him, and contrast it with all the inactive names on church rolls in America. What’s wrong with this picture? What’s wrong with us? If the Son of God walked through your front door today, would it be any big whoop? Or would you say, “Hey there, Jesus. Let’s talk after I finish Judge Judy, or my internet chat or whatever we’re doing that is more interesting to us than the Word through whom all things were made. Would Jesus be as amazed at our unbelief as he was at those in Nazareth?

Hope to see you Sunday, BRD

Pizza and Meatloaf

Dear Saints Of Andrew:

We welcome new readers to A-MAIL. We hope you enjoy receiving these. If you don’t, let us know, and we’ll take you off the list.

*

Our first Independence Day in Nebraska was memorable. We drove over to Seward for some of the afternoon festivities. If you’re ever in Seward and have the occasion to visit the downtown café, let me heartily recommend the meatloaf. We were back home by the time night fell. I’m accustomed to Missouri fireworks, which tend to be concentrated in a few large public displays. Nancy and I were astonished at what we experienced last night. From higher vantage points in our neighborhood, it looked like Omaha was under attack, bombs bursting in every direction. We thought it would be neat to see this from the church, but it was downright eerie, driving the backstreets of our subdivision to get there, literally weaving our way through a gauntlet of home-style bombers. And somewhere I got the idea that fireworks are illegal in Nebraska ?

Ezekiel 2:1-5

The Lord said to me: O mortal, stand up on your feet, and I will speak with you. And when he spoke to me, a spirit entered into me and set me on my feet; and I heard him speaking to me. He said to me, Mortal, I am sending you to the people of Israel, to a nation of rebels who have rebelled against me; they and their ancestors have transgressed against me to this very day. The descendants are impudent and stubborn. I am sending you to them, and you shall say to them, "Thus says the Lord GOD." Whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house), they shall know that there has been a prophet among them.
COMMENTARY: The Old Testament prophets are clear and unambiguous: Theirs is a nation under God. Such language would have been more than a slogan to Ezekiel, certainly NOT interchangeable with “with my country, right or wrong.” It meant his nation was under the judgment of God, accountable to God. Open the scriptures. Read for yourself what the Lord GOD says about justice, righteousness, obedience. Ezekiel would surely invite us to ask how our nation measures up.
