Living Peaceably With All

THIS SUNDAY
March 4, 2007
The Second Sunday in Lent
Bruce Davis preaching:
THE PARABLE OF THE MANAGER
Luke 16:1-13.
*
Nancy will be gone this Sunday, taking about fifty St. Andrew’s church women on a retreat. Therefore, I’ll particularly appreciate any and all who will be us Sunday morning to keep me company.
*
FYI: This being a communion Sunday, the way we’ve reordered the first Sunday of the month, the preaching starts about ten minutes into the service.
*
A word on cancellations. It’s going to take a genuine blizzard and/or heavy ice storm to cause a change, much less cancellation of our Sunday morning schedule. In fact, we had first time visitors here for the 8:00 service on Sunday! For cancellation information, the first place to look is the web site, in the box where we regularly post the sermon title.
*
TRIVIA NIGHT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR SATURDAY EVENING, APRIL 21.
*
PIZZA WITH THE PASTORS
March 11, 5:00-6:30
Designed for persons moving toward membership at St. Andrew’s.
Sign up at the Hospitality Desk in the Rotunda or via return e-mail.
*
Once again St. Andrew’s will be collecting EASTER FOOD BASKETS for Together, Inc. Please help the less fortunate in our community by providing the food items and monetary donation for each food sack as listed below. If you have any questions, please call Starla Muller.

Together, Inc.’s Easter Food Basket
1 Large Box Scalloped Potatoes
3 Cans Vegetables
1 Graham Cracker Pie Crust
1 Large Can Fruit Pie Filling
1 Bag Easter Candy
1 Easter Egg Dye Kit
$10 Check made payable to Together, Inc. for a voucher for fresh eggs and ham. Please place the check in an envelope and staple to the outside of the food basket. Food sacks must be at St. Andrew’s by Monday, March 26th and should be placed in the narthex.
*
A computer glitch deleted the name of the Dennis Lehane novel I’ll be talking about on March 11: “Shutter Island.” Sorry about that.” And the Sergio Leone film, scored by Ennio Morricone, is “Once Upon A Time In America.” Actually, they also collaborated on another film, “Once Upon A Time In The West,” in which Henry Fonda played a bad, bad man.
*
Many of you seem to be receiving mailings from a group suggesting the United Methodist Church is in danger of following the Episcopalian model regarding homosexual issues, resulting in schism. Of course, the letter asks you to send money to the group. Let me be frank: I think the chances of any change in the United Methodist Book of Discipline regarding homosexuality is extremely remote. There was less support for such change at the 2004 General Conference than at the 2000 gathering, and I anticipate even less support for change--be it more liberal or conservative--in 2008. Most United Methodists can at least live with the present position: all persons are welcome in United Methodist congregations, and we do not ordain self-avowed practicing homosexuals into ministry. Frankly, I have little regard for the various caucus groups within the United Methodist Church, on either end of the social spectrum. In my experience, they tend to mischaracterize what others are saying, quoting out of context, and generally whipping up counterproductive emotions.
*
Attention High School Seniors! SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY! In addition to the Bea Shannon Memorial Scholarship awarded to a graduating senior in the amount of $500 there is also a $1500 Alan J Bruner Memorial Scholarship available. Applications are available at the youth table located in the Rotunda. Alan J Bruner was a charter member of St. Andrews UMC. He lived life to the fullest and loved his daughter, Julia, dearly. To honor this love a scholarship will be awarded to a High School senior. Any questions please contact Bob Davis. Applications are due by March 20, 2007.
*
SUSAN B. writes “I just wanted to thank the church for all the kindness shown our family during a very hard time in our lives. Thank you for having us on the prayer list and for having people bring us meals during my recovery and sickness. May God bless you for your love and kindness.”
*
PASTOR CHARLOTTE asks: Prayers for Alice M., critically ill (102 year old aunt of Pastor Charlotte). Prayers for Cody H., preparing for surgery (son of Denise J.).
*
Romans 12:9-18, “Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depend on you, live peaceably with all.”

SNOW AND SLEET DID NOT PREVENT THE FOLLOWING GREAT SOULS FROM BEING JOINED TO ST. ANDREW'S ON FEBRUARY 25:

STEVE and CINDY S. Steve and Cindy are already plugged into St. Andrew’s Wednesday evening “Living The Questions” class.

MIKE and KARLA S. Mike and Karla have a three year old son, Kaden, and are expecting a daughter in March.
*
Suffice to say, those in attendance Sunday morning had no difficulty finding a place to sit. Worship attendance was 388. We had 39 children in the church school. I blame the weather forecasters as much as the weather itself. This talk of a blizzard surely freaked people out. What actually precipitated hardly merited the B word. But then I guess weather guys and gals would rather give a dire forecast and be wrong than offer an optimistic forecast and have people caught in snowdrifts.
*
These bad weather weekends and consequent low attendance Sundays have hurt us financially. Anyone who is a position to help us catch up would be as an angel in our midst.

The Second Sunday in Lent

Bruce Davis preaching:

THE PARABLE OF THE MANAGER

Luke 16:1-13.
*
Mystery readers, let me highly recommend Dennis Lahane’s “,” out now in paperback. But if you plan to read it, do so in the next 13 days, as I will be giving away the ending in the March 11 sermon, “THE PARABLE OF THE EMPTY HOUSE.”
*
Nancy and I tuned out the Oscars to watch Helen Mirren in a “Prime Suspect” rerun on PBS. We got back to the Oscars just in time to see Ms. Mirren very deservedly win in the Best Actress category for “The Queen.” I was surprised and disappointed that the Clint Eastwood Iwo Jima movies were shut out. The Ennio Morricone tribute was terrific. That Celine Dion song was set to a tune from one of the best movies few have ever seen: “Once Upon A Time In .” What she sang as “Knew I Loved You” was originally “Deborah’s Theme.” What a luscious melody.
*
ERIC H. writes: The Men's Softball team registration is now closed. We have 45 players registered and plan to have three teams. This is a new record for St. Andrew's!!! All players have until this Sunday, March 4th to turn in their registration fee and sign the OSA waiver form at the church office.
*

PASTOR CHARLOTTE asks: Prayers for Jim E., in his long recovery from a stroke; pray, also, for strength and hope for his wife, Shirley, and family (Grandparents of Kelly R.). Prayers for Marvin B., cancer has recurred (friend of Ed & Lela C.). Prayers of encouragement for Maria, a young mom Todd S. met, traveling from Tampa. Luke 16:1-9

Then Jesus said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property. So he summoned him and said to him, “What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.” Then the manager said to himself, “What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.’ So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he asked the first, “How much do you owe my master?” He answered, “A hundred jugs of olive oil.” He said to him, “Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.” Then he asked another, “And how much do you owe?” He replied, “A hundred containers of wheat.” He said to him, “Take your bill and make it eighty.” And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone they may welcome you into the eternal homes.”

Parables & Softball

THIS SUNDAY, February 25, 2007
Nancy Davis preaching:
THE PARABLE OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN
"Beating People Up, Passing People Up, Helping People Up"
*
I was excited about the strong turnout for our Ash Wednesday events. VERY impressive!
*
I like Friday afternoons. There's not much activity in the office, and it's a great time to get caught up. The only staff person I've seen since I arrived around 12:30 is Cami, who stuck her head in to suggest we pray the bad weather will pass us by this weekend. Cami, of course, is our Financial Administrator. When attendance is down, giving, of course, suffers with it. We were hurt by a bad weather Sunday in January and another this Sunday would potentially make for a dismal February financial report.
*
While appreciating and sharing Cami's concern, I'm hoping the weather will permit members and friends of St. Andrew's to hear the first in our Lenten sermon series on the Parables of Jesus. Nancy starts this Sunday with "The Good Samaritan." I've been working on "The Parable of The Manager" and "The Parable of The Empty House", to be preached March 4 &11 respectively. I guarantee thee: If you make it a point to be with us on the Sundays of Lent this year, you‚ll know more about the ministry of Jesus than you know now. I'm fascinated by how much I'm learning in putting these sermons together.
*
DAVE S. WRITES: It looks like Becky L. and I will head up a Co-Ed Slow Pitch softball team if there is enough interest. Here is what we anticipate:

Metro Omaha Softball LLC
1. Co-Ed Slow Pitch Class D or even Class E (recreational) depending on who we get initial commitments from
2. We are looking to have a minimum of 8 gals and 6 guys.
3. We anticipate playing on Monday evenings.
4. Cost is $350 plus the $16 per game for other fees. With 14 people it should be around $40 - $50 per person. That is not including a potential for shirts.

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, CONTACT DAVE OR BECKY, OR SEND A REPLY TO E-MAIL TO BRUCE AND I'LL PASS IT TO THEM.
*
ERIC H. writes: There will be a short organizational meeting for the St. Andrew's Men's softball teams this Sunday afternoon in the Family Life Center at 4:30pm. Please bring $50 payable to St. Andrew's, sign the official OSA registration form and get more information about the upcoming season.
*
>From BOB D.: Attention HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS: The Bea Shannon Memorial Scholarship is a tribute to a fine Christian woman whose membership in the United Methodist Church spanned nearly seven decades. One award in the amount of $500.00 will be awarded to a graduating High School senior by the United Methodist Women. All seniors should apply for this scholarship! Applications will be available at the youth table located in the Rotunda or by contacting Bob Davis. Applications will be accepted until 5pm March 20, 2007. Please return applications to Bob Davis‚ mailbox in the church office.

PASTOR CHARLOTTE tells us: Alice K. will be 100 on March 2nd. She has been a very caring and generous friend of St. Andrew's since our beginning. Please join in a card shower for her in honor of this milestone in her life. Address: Crowell Memorial Home, 2455 S. 22nd St., Rm. 48, Blair, NE 68008-1980. Be sure to identify that you are with St. Andrew's it will really give her a lift. Charlotte also asks: Prayers for Rev. Joe Jones, recovering from heart bypass surgery (friend of their family).
*
Luke 10:30-37 Jesus answered, "A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who both stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. By chance a certain priest was going down that way. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. In the same way a Levite also, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he traveled, came where he was. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion, came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, and gave them to the host, and said to him, ŒTake care of him. Whatever you spend beyond that, I will repay you when I return.‚ Now which of these three do you think seemed to be a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?" He said, "He who showed mercy on him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go
and do likewise."

Ashes

The liturgical season of Lent—a time of reflection and repentance, modeled after Jesus’ 40 days of temptation in the wilderness following his baptism (see Luke 4:1-13)—began at St. Andrew’s this morning with a seven AM worship service. We’ll be together again this evening at 7:00. If you want to eat with us, soup is served from 6:00-7:00. Nancy and I will be preaching on the Parables of Jesus between now and Easter, starting this Sunday with Nancy’s sermon on “THE GOOD SAMARITAN: Beating People Up, Passing People Up, Helping People Up.”

ERIC H. writes: There will be a short organizational meeting for the St. Andrew's Men's softball teams this Sunday afternoon in the Family Life Center at 4:30pm. Please bring $50 payable to St. Andrew's, sign the official OSA registration form and get more information about the upcoming season.

From NETTA P.:

A few funny and positive things happening in Upward Basketball and Cheerleading:

A Father is overheard speaking to his son during a period break in last week’s Upward Kindergarten hour regarding a rug burn on the elbow. “You’ll be OK, you still have to play the next period so tough it out. Rub some dirt on it,” says the father attempting to encourage his 6 year old to continue playing and forget about the burning sensation on his arm. While rolling his eyes, the 6 year old retorts, “Daaaaaaaad! That is so not Upwardsy of you!”

Referee Brian S. complimented 2 things: 1) The extremely noticeable skill level difference he personally has observed the last couple weeks between the 4th graders in Upwards vs. other basketball programs. 2) He is, also, extremely impressed when the refs blew their whistle and asked players this last week, “Can you tell me what happened?” or “why did I blow my whistle?” Each and every player was 100% correct with their answers. They knew exactly why the whistle was blown and why play was stopped! Brian S. is very impressed with what he has seen early on with this years Upward kids! Brian has been officiating youth basketball for more than a decade and when he makes compliments like these, they carry a lot of weight!

Finally: Thank to all the Cheerleaders who participated in the Worship Services this past Sunday. You were great!

I sensed yesterday was going to be a very good day when I looked out my office window and saw a beautiful sunrise through the little clump of trees east of the church. I never knew 40 degrees could feel so good. Spring is out there somewhere!
*
Worship attendance on Presidents Weekend was 831. The Children’s Department reports 144 in attendance.
*
I spent about five hours over the weekend on Iwo Jima. As a Valentines gift, Nancy gave me a DVD copy of “Flags Of Our Fathers.” The book had been so memorable, I wasn’t certain I wanted to see the film—but watching it Saturday evening, from the comfort of our living room, I decided I needed to see the companion film, “Letters From Iwo Jima,” post haste. So while Nancy was teaching Bible study last night, I was in a theatre, witnessing the battle from the Japanese perspective. It was fascinating to see scenes from “Flags” expanded upon in “Letters.” Put the two films together and you one of the most powerful screen experiences I’ve ever seen. And I would add this: Unless you have a really big television set, the way “Letters” is subtitled may make it difficult to follow on DVD/video—another good reason for seeing this in theatres. I should quickly add that the combat footage is graphic.
*
PASTOR CHARLOTTE asks: Prayers for Bea J., going through additional testing (sister-in-law of Sharon K.); pray, also, for her husband, Lyon. Prayers for a friend of Sharon K., preparing for further blood work. Prayers for Sandy H., preparing for very serious heart surgery on March 1st (niece of Sharon & Leroy K.). Prayers for Bonnie D., recently diagnosed with breast cancer (friend of Becky L.). Prayers for Shirley & Bill C., rebuilding in The Villages, FL, after the tornado.
*
Matthew 20:29-34
As they were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed Jesus. There were two blind men sitting by the roadside. When they heard that Jesus was passing by, they shouted, “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” The crowd sternly ordered them to be quiet; but they shouted even more loudly, “Have mercy on us, Lord, Son of David!” Jesus stood still and called them, saying, “What do you want me to do for you?” They said to him, “Lord, let our eyes be opened.” Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes. Immediately they regained their sight and followed him.

The second area of service in this ministry is to be a volunteer cook (or take-out deliverer)! You provide a meal only when it fits into your schedule, as needs arise. Please take one of our brochures from the information stand in the Rotunda. If you have any questions, please contact Janet K.

Mark 9:2-9

Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

I really didn't much care who won the Super Bowl, but I was awfully happy for Tony Dungy. What a class guy. In a post-game interview, when a reporter asked the obvious question about being the first African-American head coach to win the big game, Dungy seemed more interested in the significance of Christian coaches like him and Lovie Smith having made it to the big game. I know, there are surely a lot of Christian coaches in the NFL, but how many would talk about their faith in the immediate post-game interview of a Super Bowl victory?

When I heard Prince was scheduled for the Super Bowl half-time, I thought, "Huh?"˜and giggled at the pundit's line, "The artist formerly known." But he was∑ELECTRIC!

I'm still looking for a copy of the film, "The Piano." I think I confused people last week. Yes, this is the film set in New Zealand, or some such place, starring Holly Hunter and Harvey Keitel.
*
Also, do you remember the song "Put A Little Love In Your Heart"? There are a bunch of downloadable versions of I-Tunes, but not the Jackie DeShannon original. Does anyone out there have Jackie's version on CD?

Cathi Roberts writes:
The American Cancer Society is once again gearing up for it's annual Relay For Life. This year's Relay at Millard West High School is on June 9, 2007. I'ts always sobering to me when I hear about this event because I reflect on the past year and all of the people I personally know who have been diagnosed with cancer. It's twice as sobering to me because every one of my mother's family has battled cancer. So I'm making a plea to you to help wage this war on cancer. I'm looking for team captains, participants, and people who would like to help on the day of the event. Relay For Life has historically been a wonderful outreach opportunity for our church. Let's do it again! Call Cathi Roberts or email her. Thank you.

JOYCE MILLER WRITES: The St. Andrews Handbell Choir just keeps growing and growing and growing. When we began in June the choir rang with only three out of the five octaves of bells. By fall we had added the fourth octave of bells and we now are ringing with all five octaves. We spent one evening doing bell polishing so when we rang in February the bells would look like new. We would welcome any person interested in ringing to join the choir. There are still bells available for ringing. We meet on Monday nights from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Music Room. We will also be making a CD with the help of Steve Groves. We are excited about this event.

>From BOB DAVIS: St Andrew's youth want to answer an urgent call received on Tuesday and need your help. The Sienna Francis House reported they are in critical need of Laundry Soap (Powder), Toilet Paper, and Trash Can Liners (45 -55 gal). Our youth will be collecting these items this Sunday February 11 at the youth table located in the Rotunda. We will be departing at 12pm the same day to deliver the items. Thank you in advance for your support.

SHEILA C. writes: Erin and I had planned months ago to attend "Phantom of the Opera" at the Des Moines Civic Center this Friday evening, 2/9. However, we now find that we can't attend that night because Erin is scheduled to take the ACT on Saturday morning the 10th. I'm wondering if anyone in the congregation might be interested in buying them. Hate for them to go to waste.....

As I took grief for my "sniff the tunic" passage of Monday, let's retreat to more familiar verse from the Psalms. How about one of the Hallel/Passover Psalms referred to on Sunday? Let's go with 113:

"Praise the Lord! Praise, O servants of the Lord; praise the name of the Lord. Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time on and forevermore. From the rising of the sun to its setting the name of the Lord is to be praised. The Lord is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens. Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth? He raises the poor from the dust, and lifts up the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes, with the princes of his people. He gives the barren woman a home, making the the joyous mother of children. Praise the Lord!"

Tunics

THIS SUNDAY
February 11, 2007
Nancy Davis preaching:
”AND THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER”

We had a memorable morning, yesterday. It was as if people collectively decided, if they were going to get out in this extreme cold anyway, they were going to be of particularly good cheer once they got here. It felt to me like the Holy Spirit took hold of those services and we just soared through the morning. I really like the youth component we’ve built into the first Sunday of each month. The progress of the Youth Praise Band, since Leon started working with them, is simply remarkable. The young people bring such joy to our worship experience. While I’m bragging on the youth, this was far and away the best Super Bowl sub sandwich I’ve ever eaten. I wish you could seen the group at work when I got here, circa 7:00 AM—an assembly-line of bright-eyed young people making sandwiches, and clearly having fun in the doing. I really like what I see happening in the St. Andrew’s Youth Ministry.
*
On a zero degree morning, we had a worship count of 688, with another 116 kiddies in the Sunday School.

ST. ANDREW’S SINGLES (SAS)
A team of people from St. Andrew's have begun planning our new Singles' Ministry efforts. The singles' ministry will be known as St. Andrew's Singles (SAS). They've laid out some events for singles at church to join in. There will also be a survey on-line soon looking for ideas and suggestions.
The team has come up with the following Statement of Purpose:

“Empowering single adults to become closer to Christ through a ministry of spirituality, compassionate fellowship, and fun.”

This Sunday, during the pancake breakfast, there will be a table for singles to join and meet other singles for fellowship. Then, if you'd like you may go to services as a group. Dawn H. and Mark S. will be at the table - look for the SAS table tent sign and join them! There will be a table in the rotunda with new information about SAS upcoming events, study opportunities and other information of interest to singles. Stop by. Enjoy a cup of coffee and the fellowship between services beginning Feb. 18th. Sign up to receive e-mail updates of singles' activities at St. Andrews and more. Again, if you'd like to attend the service with the others from SAS, please join in. There is also a Singles link on the St. Andrew's webpage, be watching for announcements of events for a growing number of people in our church family. Finally, if you are single, divorced, or widowed and would like to join the team leading this ministry effort contact Dawn or Mark . You can also contact Diana F. in the church office.

As mentioned Sunday, UPWARD BASKETBALL & CHEERLEADING has tipped off for a new season. Here’s some of the feedback Netta P.’s been receiving:

“We had guests on Saturday for the Upward Games and they were absolutely AMAZED and thought it was the most wonderful thing.”

“I wish to pass along my appreciation to all that you and your staff have done to organize such a wonderful program. This is the first year my son has played. He’s always wanted to play basketball and this was a wonderful way for him to start with out all the pressures other leagues put on the kids. You’ve done a wonderful job as it’s a first rate program. I love the tunnel at the beginning of the games and so does my son Eric. He looks forward to the practice and games every week.”

I’ve been reading the little books in the back of the New Testament. Here’s an interesting passage from Jude, last stop before The Revelation:

“But you, beloved, must remember the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; for they said to you, ‘In the last time there will be scoffers, indulging their own ungodly lusts.’ It is these worldly people, devoid of the Spirit, who are causing divisions. But you, beloved, build yourselves up on your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit; keep yourselves in the love of God; look forward to the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. And have mercy on some who are wavering, save others by snatching them out of the fire; and have mercy on still others with fear, hating even the tunic defiled by their bodies.”

Now, I’m not suggesting you hate anyone’s tunic, but I am suggesting you build yourselves up on holy faith and keep yourself in the love of God. On the other hand, it might not hurt to take a sniff of your own tunic and see how it smells. Does it give off the aroma of mercy and kindness or of something less appealing?
