Ministry Fair Sunday

Dear Saints of Andrew:

Our newest members are:
KEVIN & JENNIE A.–Kevin is a banker with Access Bank and Jennie is the Accounting Manager for Commerce Bank. They have two children, Ayden 6 and Ella 3.
PHILLIP & JACKLYN A.–Phillip is a cabinet maker with Designer Woods and Jaclyn is the Dining Room Manager at Omaha Country Club. They are expecting their first child in February.
*
February 3 is shaping up as a BIG, BIG Sunday.

• We’ll be holding a MINISTRY FAIR in the Rotunda to kick-off WORSHIP + 1. We’re encouraging people to engage themselves with St. Andrew’s through a commitment to worship PLUS one of our small group/faith formation/service ministries. The MINISTRY FAIR is designed to offer opportunities to plug in.

• During the 9:15 & 10:45 services, we’ll be installing our 2008 Church Officers. We won’t be covering every officer in every organization—that would be impossible. This is an installation of officers elected at the Church Conference in November.

• I’m preaching in all three services: JOHN THE BAPTIST. ,

ASH WEDNESDAY is February 6. The evening begins with a Soup Supper at 6:00. The worship service starts at 7:00 and will include the Drama Team and the St. Andrew’s Singers. I’ll bring a short meditation. We will share Holy Communion and the imposition of ashes.
*
FROM PAM F.: Instead of giving something up for Lent why not give your time and talents to St. Andrew's? We will be having a Lenten choir that will sing on Sundays through Easter. Your Lenten commitment would include rehearsals with the choir on Wednesdays (starting on Feb. 13th) from 7-8:15 p.m. and then Sundays at either the 9:15 or 10:45 service (or both). Look for information on the Lenten choir at the Heartwarming Worship table this Sunday or contact Pam .
*
From BOB D.: Attention Confirmation students! There are no Confirmation classes this Tuesday Jan. 29.
*
JOYCE C. writes:
Here are two great ways you can get started with Worship +1. You could even make it Worship +2:

The first Sunday of every month, the Missions Team collects Hi-C drink boxes for Camp Fire USA. These drink boxes are included in backpacks which contain nutritious meals provided to approximately 400-500 Omaha children for the weekends. Bring your drink boxes to the Hi-C/Missions table on February 3rd!

The BLT’s (social group consisting of those of “boomer” age group ±) are going bowling on February 23rd! For details and to sign up, see the BLT board in the Narthex.
*
Our next PIZZA WITH THE PASTORS is February 17, 5:00-6:30.
PWP is a very informal event for persons interested in membership at St. Andrew’s.
Sign up at the Hospitality Desk in the Rotunda or via return e-mail.
*
We have learned that Gil H.’s mother, Gwen, has passed away. We express our heartfelt sympathy to Gil and his family. Pastor Charlotte asks prayers for the family and friends of Dianne T., who died in the Von Maur tragedy (sister of Sandi C.).
*
This is Pastor Charlotte’s last week in the office. I know many of you have already signed up for the Pastor Charlotte Appreciation Luncheon on Sunday, February 10. Reservation cards will be in the bulletin again this Sunday, or you can call the office and we’ll save a place for you.
*
Mark 1:1-3
The good news of Jesus Christ—the Message!—begins here, following to the letter the scroll of the prophet Isaiah:
Watch closely; I’m sending my preacher ahead of you.
He’ll make the road smooth for you.
Thunder in the desert!
Prepare for God’s arrival!
Make the road smooth and straight!

Joshua Fit

Dear Saints of Andrew:

Be it ever so frigid, there’s no place like home. Actually, people in Florida were griping about how cold it was down there. I understand you had some REALLY cold weather while we were gone. I can’t say I’m sorry to have missed it.

A quick look at the worship schedule for the next several weeks:

* Tomorrow, the Praise Band, Horns of Jericho and I will be offering JOSHUA FIT. We’ll be taking the Gallup Engagement Survey again—the third time in the past year. The idea is to chart trends in the congregation and we hope you will participate.

* The first Sunday in February is MINISTRY FAIR SUNDAY. I’ll be preaching a sermon titled: EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT JOHN THE BAPTIST. He is such an interesting, pivotal figure in the Biblical story. The morning will include installation of officers. We will NOT be celebrating Holy Communion as we will be serving the Holy Meal on…

* ASH WEDNESDAY, February 6. The evening starts with a Soup Supper served by the Faith Circle of the United Methodist Women at 6:00. We worship at 7:00. I had announced a sermon about James A. Garfield, but the assassinated president will have to wait as I’ve decided to give a Mary and Martha meditation in conjunction with a Mary and Martha drams from our Drama Team.

* February 10 is Love Sunday. Nancy is preaching a sermon called LOVE STORY. A reaffirmation of wedding vows will be offered following the 10:45 service and all interested couples are invited to participate. It’s also PASTOR CHARLOTTE APPRECIATION SUNDAY. Samantha M. of the Staff-Parish Committee shares the following:

Charlotte's recognition luncheon will be held on February 10th at noon in the Family Life Center. Lunch will be buffet style and include chicken, potato salad, cole slaw, chips, a vegetable tray, and dinner rolls, as well as a cake. Please RSVP for the luncheon by using the purple response cards in the bulletin the next 2 Sundays, so that we have an accurate count. Please feel free to bring Charlotte a card and Love Offering if you feel moved to do so. As a side note, this luncheon is a "Thank You" to Charlotte for her service to the church and is not a good bye as she will still be worshiping with us and we will all be able to see her each Sunday.

* February 17 starts with Mike R. preaching at 8:00. At 9:15 & 10:45, the Praise Band, Choir and I will offer a musical sermon titled BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY. I sat through a class this week about Making Church Music Different and could not help but snicker when the leader spoke excitedly about using organ and guitar together. Whee! I might add this: In terms of "best practices," St. Andrew’s stacks up very favorably across-the-board with other large, growing congregations within the United Methodist connection.

We’ll hope to see you tomorrow morning.

Pastor Charlotte Appreciation

Dear Saints of Andrew:

Nancy and I are in the airport at Orlando, awaiting our return to the frigid climes of Nebraska. It hasn’t been picture postcard weather here, with clouds and rain, but let’s face it: clouds and precipitation at 70 degrees beats clouds and precipitation at 15 degrees.
*
I’m sure many of you have the PASTOR CHARLOTTE APPRECIATION event on your calendar. We’ll be honoring Charlotte with a lunch after church on Feb. 10. As I understand it, there will be reservation cards in this Sunday’s bulletin.
*
This Sunday, January 27, the Praise Band, Horns of Jericho and I will be offering: JOSHUA FIT! The service will include a rousing rendition of When The Saints God Marching In. I’ve received effusive e-mails from our music people about their most recent rehearsal, including this Sunday’s material and the first run through of BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY, which will be offered in the 9:15 & 10:45 services on February 17. (Mike Roder is preaching at 8:00 that morning.)
*
From BOB D.: St. Andrew's Youth Group has a new name! We are now called "The Gathering", which refers to Matthew 18:20 "For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.". Really cool t-shirts have been ordered and should be arriving by Sunday Feb. 17. Please order your shirt by e-mailing Bob. Shirts cost $13.95 (make your check out to St. Andrew's).
*
Pastor Charlotte asks: Prayers for Steve S.’s mother, who is gravely ill; pray, also, for her family.
*
We’re about to find out if the Orlando airport wireless system will allow me to send bulk e-mail. If you receive this, you’ll know the answer….

I’m writing from a bench outside St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Orlando, Florida. Nancy and I are attending a Large Church Initiative event—think of it as a “best practices fair.” Nancy is presently admiring dogs. St. Luke’s Canine Crusaders—therapy hounds--are welcoming people to worship this evening. I spent the afternoon in a seminar on generational differences in giving—and there are, in fact, significant differences.. There was an improv group here earlier in the day; Nancy wound up on stage, as part of the act, and said she was reminded of the St. Andrew’s Reckless Abandon Players. She says, according to the news, it’s been snowing in Omaha. It is not snowing in Orlando. We’ve been hearing some powerful speakers, including a pastor from Belfast in Northern Ireland, whose church sits on the “Peace Line” separating Protestants from Catholics. His congregation has been a catalyst for reconciliation; in fact, he received what I think is called the Order of the British Empire from the queen herself. Referencing Jesus’ famous teaching, “You are the salt of the earth,” this guy said the American congregations see ourselves as salt depositories, when we are supposed to be salt dispensers. I like that.

Acts 9:17-21
So Ananias went and entered the house. He laid his hands on Saul and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on your way here, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit. And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and his sight was restored. Then he got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength. For several days he was with the disciples in Damascus, and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying “He is the Son of God.” All who heard him were amazed and said, “Is this not the man who made havoc in Jerusalem among those who invoked this name? And has he not come here for the purpose of bringing them bound before the chief priests?”

Nancy Davis preaching: BULLIES

NANCY WRITES: This Sunday I am preaching on the subject of bullies. Our Youth Director, Bob Davis, will be helping me with this. This is, as you all know, a very timely subject for us all, children, youth, and adults. Most adults can think of a time when they were bullied. Some can remember a time when they were bullies. In our culture today with messages of violence everywhere we cannot be surprised that the problem of bullying is increasing in our schools. I hope that you will be present, especially if you are the parents or grandparents of children and youth, or if you are a teacher or coach, or if you are a person who is interested in young people and how you can make a difference in their lives. Since this is the second Sunday, our youth will be with us during the 9:15 worship hour and if you have a youth in your family I hope you will make a special effort to have that person in worship this week. See you Sunday!

Nancy and I pigged out on movies over the holidays, including theater visits and various rentals: I was pleasantly surprised at how well Johnny Depp handled the vocals in SWEENEY TODD…. ATONEMENT just blew me away. I’m a sucker for love stories set in time of war and this film is right up there with THE ENGLISH PATIENT….We saw the stars of the just-mentioned movies, Johnny Depp and Kiera Knightly, in the third and final installment of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, which was simply awful….Has there ever been a more dreadful Christmas movie than DECK THE HALLS? None come readily to mind...Nancy and I both enjoyed the Jamie Foxx action thriller, set in Saudi Arabia, THE KINGDOM. WALK HARD had some funny moments, but included scenes too gross for this Methodist.

Matthew 5:38-41, “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, ‘Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you for your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile.”

NANCY DAVIS writes: On January 13 I am preaching a sermon about bullying and the problems associated with it. I have chosen to do this on the second Sunday of the month because that is the designated Sunday when our youth attend worship with us. I hope that parents of youth and children will want to hear this message because it is certainly a timely one and one that touches many lives. The title of the message is “BULLIES” and if you are curious why I would choose that title, I’ll tell you on the 13th! Nancy

From BOB D.: Just a reminder we do not have youth Bible study today. Youth choir will not meet this week. Pam F. and I are working on a new plan for youth choir. I will keep everyone posted. Praise band and praise singers will continue to meet at 8pm. The youth room will have a new ping pong table, an extra TV, and gaming system for the New Year.

As many of our readers know, St. Andrew’s is committed to ministry with the people of rural NICARAGUA, including our sister community of San Andres. I’ll be making a quick trip down there, leaving Thursday, February 7, returning Sunday, February 10. If you’re interested in going with us, let me know ASAP.

From JOYCE C.: This Sunday (as is the first Sunday of every month) is Hi-C Sunday. Please bring Hi-C juice drink boxes for Campfire USA. These drink boxes are included in children's "weekend backpacks" -- providing them with nutritious snacks and meals for the weekends. Without these backpacks, some of these children would have little to eat for the weekend. Your help is appreciated!

WHAT’S SO AMAZING ABOUT GRACE?
“There is nothing we can do to make God love us more. There is nothing we can do to make God love us less.” Author, Philip Yancey takes a probing look at grace: what it looks like, what it doesn’t look like, and why only Christians can and must reveal the grace the world is searching for. Corey R. & Jeff H. will co-facilitate this study on Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. starting January 9th. There is a small fee for the participant’s guide. Contact Diana to register.

Matthew, chapter 2, verses 1-12:
In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.” Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.
