Mark 11:15-19
Then they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling and those who were buying in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves; and he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. He was teaching and saying, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for the nations? But you have made it a den of robbers.” And when the chief priests and the scribes heard it, they kept looking for a way to kill him; for they were afraid of him, because the whole crowd was spellbound by his teaching. And when evening came, Jesus and his disciples went out of the city.”

Nancy and I spent Monday and Tuesday at a retreat center in Schuyler, attending a Pastoral Ethics Seminar. Such sessions are mandatory for clergy—as well they should be. Please know the United Methodist Church takes matter of clergy ethics, including sexual boundaries, very seriously.
*
We’ve had a lot of terrific feedback from the Sunday evening event. We had about two hundred people in attendance, contributing to an overall Sunday worship number of 1,048, with another 145 kiddies in the classrooms while worship was going on in the sanctuary.

Luke 10:29-40When he had come near Bethpage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying, ‘Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it,’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it.’ So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, ‘Why are you untying the colt?’ They said, ‘The Lord needs it.’ Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeps of power they had seen, saying, ‘Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven.”

Glowing

Nancy and I are in meetings today and tomorrow in Schuyler, Nebraska, but I’m still glowing from yesterday and wanted to say a word of thanks to all involved. Craig S. has already posted a gallery of photos taken last night. They can be accessed at his web site:

http://www.printroom.com/ViewGallery.asp?userid=craigstrong_id=638417.

I’ll write more about all this later in the week, but from the opening “This Is The Day” at 8:00 yesterday morning, through the final “Amen,” circa 8:30 last night, it was a great day to be a part of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church.

We had a blast! The residents were so appreciative of our youth spending part of their Sunday afternoon with them. We will continue to sing with the residents at least one Sunday per month. Double Header

This is shaping up to be one of the most exciting Sundays of the year. In the morning services (8:00, 9:15 & 10:45), I’m preaching from Luke 15, “PARABLES OF THE LOST” (The Waterloo Sermon). Then we’ll be back together at 7:00 for The Worship Celebration of St. Andrew’s, Nicaragua. The original idea for this evening service was to have a mission-themed concert and while the plan has evolved, we’ve retained a music component that I think you’ll like a lot. Yes, child care is available. I hope you’ll consider making Sunday a St. Andrew’s morning/evening double-header. I believe you’ll be glad you did. I'LL be glad you did!

FROM TRUDY M.: The American Red Cross’ type O negative blood supply has reached dangerously low levels.

O negative blood is very important in the treatment of patients and the Red Cross needs individuals with O negative blood to make an appointment to donate in the coming days. O negative blood can potentially be transfused to any patient regardless of their blood type.

O negative blood type is rare. Only 7 percent of the population has O negative blood.

O negative blood is often used to treat trauma patients in serious need of blood because it can be transfused without knowing the recipients blood type. This saves the doctors time and allows them to treat the patient immediately.

Blood is perishable so the stock must be replenished regularly through volunteer donation.

Donors need to be at least 17 years of age (16 in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and Kansas), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health to donate. Eligible donors should call 1.800.GIVE.LIFE or go online to givebloodgivelife.org for more information and to make a blood donation appointment.

Luke 15:8-19, “Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

*
During the first week in March, John A., Adrian A., Mark R. and Mark V.K. were in Nicaragua. We have invited them to share a few words about their experience:

MARK R.:
My trip to San Andres really opened my eyes as to the quality of work Rainbow Network is doing, the incredible spirit and genuine appreciation the Nicaraguan people exhibit and how God works in ways we struggle to understand. The folks in San Andres, Los Fierros, El Trapiche, Santa Lucia, San Isidro and La Trinidad were so materially poor that description is difficult; spiritually, however, they were overwhelming. People spoke openly of their faith in the Lord and how he was working through and watching over them. You and I would be hard-pressed to thank God for having so little, but not the Nicas. One of the discussions we had among ourselves (between bouncing through craters and ditches joined to be called “roads”) centered on what people consider a mission trip to be. Often, of course, we think that the object of such efforts is the conversion of those without a relationship with Jesus. In our experience, had that been our goal, we’d have been too late. You don’t take God to rural Nicaraguans, they bring Jesus to you. I know they did to me. I felt it.

Rainbow Network’s concept is slightly different than many missionary organizations. Their goal is to teach people to provide for themselves, and others, by providing funding for housing and business projects via loans that must be repaid. They assist the beneficiaries of their loan programs to help them be successful and, in turn, share their blessings with others. Of course, they also provide free medical care and feeding programs for children and pregnant or nursing mothers, but the focus of their efforts is to help entire communities improve by using their talents and faith to better themselves. We met some very proud people who have worked hard, understand the value of their accomplishments and are willing to share that with others. In El Crucero, Reyna showed us the metal and wood shack that she will be leaving once her new house is completed, pointing to the metal roof that was being eaten away as an effect of poisonous volcanic gases, then stood in her small flower garden to share her thanks. Mama Rosita, 69 years old, told us she had lived in the community all her life and her eyes shone as she talked of her 27 grandchildren and great-grandkids, saying, “The Lord has provided me strength and given me will,” while several children stood around her.

Several villagers then brought a young boy, Isaac, to us and said he was known as “the boy with the angelic voice” and “the voice of gold.” He loved to sing, his father was the village pastor and, they explained, he only sang religious songs. He stood alone, sang us a song and proved them right. His voice was wonderful. My eyes welled with tears and it was only two hours into our first day.

Rainbow Network feeds countless children the only healthy meal they eat each day. Rainbow provide much-needed medical care to the villages they serve one day every week. Students who would normally never go to high school are provided scholarships and talk of their dreams to be doctors, lawyers and, with our encouragement, president of Nicaragua. Scholarships are repaid via service to their communities as scholarship students serve as teachers for the younger children, providing benefits to both groups.

As I think about it, all these things add up to hope. These are vibrant, love-filled people who told us many times how much they appreciated our help. But the way I see it, our part is easy—they, with God at their sides, are doing the hard work themselves. Our commitment to them is one that will return much more than we invest.

MARK V. K.:
The resounding faith of the people we met in Nicaragua really amazed me. Despite the depth of poverty (or perhaps because of it), these people leaned heavily on their faith and made it a part of their lives in a way that we don't often see in this country. And they are so happy, despite their economic circumstances. They have so little, and yet they have so much.

Rainbow Network's programs have made such a huge difference in the communities we visited. I really like the fact that Rainbow works in several different ways - addressing health, education, nutrition, housing, and economic development. Rainbow believes that all these elements are interrelated; to make a community better means working in all these areas.

And perhaps the best part of Rainbow's programs is that it is Nicaraguans helping Nicaraguans. The employees of Rainbow (network directors, doctors, health educators, teachers, etc.) are almost entirely Nicaraguan. And the communities themselves provide loads of volunteers. What we can provide is the resources for these folks to help themselves.

ADRIAN A.:
1) We were honored to meet the National Poetry winner in the last town we visited. She is a Rainbow Scholarship recipient, and without Rainbow's educational and mentoring programs, her talents may have never been exposed and encouraged.

2) All these families need is for a break in life, someone to open a door to opportunity. They never asked us to pity them or asked for handouts, but asked for an opportunity to help themselves. Rainbow Network provides an opportunity by opening a door, and the Nicas have taken full advantage of the support. Let me tell you that no Cordoba (Nicaraguan Currency) goes wasted.

3) We had the pleasure of meeting Cesar Estrella, the nominated community leader of San Andres housing project, has used his micro loans to start a Pulgeria (small store with basic need items like toiletries, basic food items, some cosmetics to mention a few), and then he used some of those profits to buy some pigs which he is breeding for self consumption and selling. He has also planted some fruit trees. This is the spirit of Rainbow at work, but trust me, Cesar Estrella is a self made entrepreneur; given different circumstances in his life, he would have been president of any company.

JOHN A. summed up the experience with this e- note:
Gentlemen: I really enjoyed participating in the Nicaraqua mission with all of you, and it was a very moving spiritual experience for me. It was also nice to get to know each of you personally. The hope, spirit and gratefulness of the people in such a depressed environment was truly amazing, and I am again very thankful for everything that God has provided to my family.

Our newest members are:
DENNIS & GLORIA A.
BILL & TERESA K. (We were privileged to baptize Bill)
CRAIG, KATHI, ALYSON & JOSHUA M.

I’m really pumped about this coming Sunday. I’m having a lot of fun with “PARABLES OF THE LOST” (The Waterloo Sermon). And the 7:00 evening worship celebration of St. Andrew’s Nicaragua, is shaping up wonderfully. I hope you’ll make it a morning/evening double-header. I’m guesstimating the evening service will last about an hour and fifteen minutes.

If anyone got a good picture of the mass of Upward people on the chancel during the 10:45 service, I’d appreciate a copy.

Speaking of hoops, now that Creighton’s season is over, who do you like in the NCAA tournament? I’ve got Kansas and North Carolina in the finals. On the Kansas side, my daughter Laura graduates from KU this spring. The Tar Heels feature this Hanbrough kid from Poplar Bluff, Missouri. I saw him play during high school and while I deeply regret that he did not go the University of Missouri (my alma mater), it’s hard to blame him, given the mess in the Tigers program.
*
The worship count Sunday was 1,057, with another 135 kids in Church School.

Remember, we’ve rescheduled TRIVIA NIGHT for Saturday evening, April 21, 7:00. If you’d like to plug in, sign up at the Trivia Table this Sunday or via return e-mail. Cost is $5 for those who register in advance, $10 at the door.

Luke 15:1-7: Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.” So he told them a parable: “Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’ Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance."

Thursday April 5th 7pm. This collection of poems will be presented in the form of monologues about people who were with Jesus the week before his crucifixion. It will be accompanied by an art show in the Rotunda featuring local artist Paula Wallace, whose work is used in the drama. We will, of course, share the sacrament of Holy Communion in remembrance of The Last Supper.

We’re behind on reporting worship counts. On March 4, we had 749 people in the various services, with another 122 kiddies in church school. Time Change Sunday, the 11th, the report is 717 & 190. Speaking of kiddies, I understand Sunday’s puppet troupe from Ogallala was a big hit.

I’m feeling better today. The doctor gave an antibiotic that surely helped. This leads to yet another reflection about the Rainbow Network and San Andres. Before Rainbow came along, a lot of these communities never saw a doctor or prescription medicines. There’s no Walgreen’s in San Andres. San Andres is a circuit traveled by a physician. He brings with him a couple of large tubs of medicines. I just stuck a pharmacy picture on the web site: www. standrewomaha.net. Hit the San Andres link and look under the picture of the Rainbow doctor. Our big celebration is planned for Sunday evening, March 25, 7:00.

TRIVIA NIGHT RESCHEDULED. Let’s try again! The weather really messed up our originally schedule date so we’ll try another one. Trivia Night is now scheduled for April 21 at 7:00 P.M. If you were registered for the cancelled one, just let us know if you want to keep that registration or if you are canceling. IF you did not register for the cancelled one and would like to register for this one, we hope you will do that. As before, if you register prior to the 21st the cost is $5.00 per person. IF you just walk in that evening the cost is $10.00 per person.

I swallowed a lot of dust last week in Nicaragua. Sitting in the doctor’s office today, I remembered that respiratory illness is a leading cause of death in rural Nicaragua. The only medical care back in there is from doctors funded by the Rainbow Network. Among the components of our partnership with the community of San Andres is underwriting the local physician and the medicines. I just put a picture of the Rainbow doctor on the web page. Go to www.standrewsomaha.net and hit the San Andres link. While you’re at it, please share the page with any and all you think might be interested and invite them to our big celebration, the evening of March 25.

JAMIE S. WRITES: There is a survey on the St. Andrew's website right now. The goal of this survey is to help us understand what the congregation needs/wants for "connecting with others" and "growing in faith" at St. Andrews. I would like the opportunity to get everyone's opinions of what St. Andrew's is doing/could do to meet their needs and the best form of communication the church has to reach our congregation is A-mail. We currently have 34 people who have taken the survey...I'd like to see this number be in the 100's. You can take the survey by going to the home page of the church web site: www.standrewsomaha.net and hitting CLICK HERE TO TAKE OUR SURVEY, or by going directly to the following site: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=634573217706

Hola

Just a quick note to say HOLA! I'm back from Nicaragua. It was a great trip, even if my respiratory system is clogged with dust. Getting back into the rural villages is an adventure. The traveling party of myself, John Allbery, Adrian Alvarez, Mark Roberts and Mark Van Kekerix will have lots of stories to tell and pictures to share of St. Andrew's (San Andres), Nicaragua. We've scheduled a worship party to celebrate this partnership: Sunday evening, March 25, 7:00. Hope you can be with us.
*
Remember, this is a time change weekend. I'm preaching this Sunday: THE PARABLE OF THE EMPTY HOUSE.

The 11th is a PIZZA WITH THE PASTORS Sunday, 5:00-6:30. PWP is designed for persons moving toward membership at St. Andrew’s. E-mail or sign up in the Rotunda Sunday morning, so we’ll know how much pizza to order.

Nancy got home around 1:00 this afternoon, reporting the Women’s Retreat was a big success—no surprise there. We’ll be hearing from the Women’s Retreat Chorus in the 9:15 & 10:45 services this coming Sunday. With her gone, I wound up doing most all the talking this morning. It’s funny the difference that makes. I knew I was getting tired in the third service; when “talents and pounds” came out “palents and tounds,” I feared the train was running off the track entirely.
*
This is a rare Sunday evening A-Mail. I leave tomorrow morning for Nicaragua, returning on Thursday. Also making the trip are Adrian A., John A., Mark R. and Mark VK. Then Nancy and I are driving to Lawrence, Kansas, on Friday (parenting stuff), returning on Saturday, so I’m not going to be around much this week.

This flight is Omaha to Houston to Managua. First time I went to Nicaragua, nine years ago, I flew out of Springfield, Missouri, with stops in Houston, Guatemala City, and San Salvador before getting to Nicaragua’s capital. Three years ago, it was Springfield to Miami to Managua, which would have been fine, except there wasn’t a gate open in Miami, so the plane sat on the tarmac for an hour and I wound up spending the night in Miami, which sounds more exotic than it turned out to be. You know you’re getting older when you can’t get excited about a free evening in Miami.

Matthew 12:43-45
“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it wanders through waterless regions looking for a resting place, but finds none. Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ When it comes, it finds it empty, swept, and put
in order. Then it goes and brings along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and live there; and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So will it be also with this evil generation.”

I hope you saw the review of “Crowns” in yesterday’s newspaper, and, in particular, the role of R. Leon Adams. I had sent Leon a note about the review and he responded with the following: The show runs from Thursdays through Saturday 7:30 to 9:30, Sundays, 3:00 to 5:00. Cost: $20 for adults $15 for students/seniors. All Thursday shows are $15. The show will be running until March 18th. I will be playing only on the Thursday and Sunday shows, (due to my commitments with the Confidentials on Fridays and Saturdays.) The shows are playing at the John Beasley Theatre on 30th and Q streets. Also from Leon: Sunday April 15th, St Andrews will be having a very special musical worship service. Anyone who would like to contribute your musical talents should contact Leon Adams, Director of Music Ministries. There will be 10 selections for each of the three services. Please contact Leon no later than March 15th, so he can organize the song selections. This will be a fun service so please get involved!!"
