Labor Day

THIS SUNDAY
September 2, 2007
Nancy has a sermon for Labor Day Weekend: “YOU’RE FIRED!”
*
Football is such a year-round conversation in Nebraska, it seems there ought to be some kind of state-wide drum roll when the season actually starts.
*
Speaking of sports: Cubs fans, I thoroughly expect your team to win the National League Central, but I hope my wounded, downtrodden Cardinals can keep things interesting. I’m shocked the birds-on-the-bat are still in the hunt.
*
SEPTEMBER 9
8:00: Rev. Charlotte preaching: “RUNNING ON EMPTY”
9:15 & 10:45: The world premiere of “LES MISERABLES: THE SERMON”
*
Our next PIZZA WITH THE PASTORS (a low-to-no pressure event designed for people interested in membership at St. Andrew’s) is scheduled for SEPTEMBER 9, 5:00-6:30, not June, as stated in our most recent A-Mail. I must have had brain lock. Sign up in the Rotunda, so we’ll know how much pizza to order.
*
Director of Youth Ministries BOB D. writes: Steppin’ up Sunday was a great success! We had 79 youth and 9 adult Sunday school teachers present at Sunday school. It was a great site to see and hear our youth praise band begin Sunday school. We have 16 youth involved in the praise band this year. We will continue to meet in the Family Life Center for Sunday school every Sunday except the 2nd Sunday of the month. We will be worshiping in the sanctuary the 2nd Sunday of each month. I will post a sign in the Rotunda as a reminder. ATTENTION PARENTS OF SENIOR HIGH YOUTH! I have registered for next year’s “Youth Works” mission trip. We are traveling to Rosebud Reservation located in South Dakota. I have reserved 35 spots (we can add to this number if there is room available). The cost of the Youth Works portion of the trip will be $258.00 per youth. I need a $100 deposit from each youth planning on attending as I have to send in our group deposit by September 10. I will have a sign up sheet on the youth table located in the Rotunda or you can e-mail me to sign up. Please make checks out to St Andrews. Secure your spot today as the trip we be amazing!
*
Deuteronomy 14:22-23, Set apart a tithe of all the yield of your seed that is brought in yearly from the field. In the presence of the Lord your God, in the place that he will choose as a dwelling for his name, you shall eat the tithe of your grain, your wine, and your oil, as well as the firstlings of your herd and flock, so that you may learn to fear the Lord your God always.

Cami

THIS SUNDAY
September 2, 2007
Nancy preaching: “YOU’RE FIRED!”
(Trust us, the sermon title has nothing to do with the material that follows J)
*
NANCY DAVIS writes:

STAFF NEWS: Our terrific Business Administrator, CAMI P., has resigned her position here at St. Andrews to take a new job at Alegent Health. Cami has been so outstanding in her work at St. Andrews that it is impossible to even express our thanks to her. She has been instrumental in getting the financial workings of St. Andrews in order. She has worked many hours with staff in our pre-school/day care program and, largely due to her efforts, that program is now running very well. She has been an invaluable part of this staff and everyone will miss her. She will continue to be part of the St. Andrews family so we’ll all get to see her often –which is a source of joy.

HEATHER D., who has been our Office Administrator, will be moving into Cami’s position as of September 4. Heather has extensive experience and training in accounting procedures and has received advanced training in the computer program that we use for our church record keeping.

JUDY H., who has been working with data entry and membership records, will move into the front-desk/receptionist position, also on September 4. Judy’s friendly and welcoming personality will prove her to be a great asset in this new position.

We are also adding a new position to the staff. MANDY B. will begin on September 10 as our Director of Radical Hospitality. Mandy will be the “face” of St. Andrews to visitors, prospective members, and new members. She will direct the work of the greeters, ushers, and others who are involved in the Sunday morning welcoming program. She will also work with new families to help them assimilate into St. Andrews – the make this church family feel like THEIR OWN church family. Mandy is married to Tom and has two little boys – Jax and Alex. They have been members of St. Andrews for about a year and Mandy has been working with middle school Wednesday night Bible study (which she will continue to do). Mandy will prove to be a tremendous asset to St. Andrews’ ministry in this position.
*
STEPFAMILY GROUP
Nancy is interested in starting a group for stepfamilies here at St. Andrews. The group would be a support group, fellowship group, study group and would also arrange to hear from people with expertise in the area of stepfamilies and the special challenges they face. If you are part of a stepfamily situation and would like to be in on the planning stages of this new group, please call Nancy at the church office.

We had a great Steppin Up Sunday. I was so proud of the entire organization. We did have a moment of panic when Netta told me, minutes before the 9:15 service was to start, that there was no sign of the Baptist drum corps. Netta had called them multiple times during the week to confirm they would be here—but at 9:10, there was no sign of them. So I moved briskly to the front and explained the situation to the band. Leon said, “Sure, we can do this.” Bill and Gene Wert said, “Sure, we can do the drum cadence.” Adam said, “I think I know the routine well enough to play it on keyboard,” whereupon he hit a few flawless bars of “Jesus Christ Superstar.” There are many things I can’t do, but one thing I CAN do is lead a kiddy parade. The congregation got into it, clapping in rhythm. I loved the spirit in the room. And the weather cooperated, so the children were able to jump in the inflatables and we were all able to eat our hot dogs and hamburgers either indoors or outdoors. It was, in sum, a day of CONNECTIONAL JOY!!!

THIS SUNDAY
September 2, 2007
Nancy preaching: “YOU’RE FIRED!”

The script for “Les Miserables: The Sermon” is finally finished. The first draft was put together ten weeks ago. My method is to work up a script, hear how it sounds, then make revisions, whereupon we take it into another rehearsal and the cycle just keeps cycling. This thing has gone through a LOT of revisions, with cast members making significant contributions to the final shape and form. Between cast and crew, we’ve got about 44 people involved. “Les Miserables: The Sermon” will be offered during the 9:15 & 10:45 hours on September 9. (Charlotte Mallott is preaching at 8:00) The overture begins promptly at 9:15 & 10:45. The doors will be closed during the opening number, opened again through the greeting, so please don’t be late.
*
NANCY’S WORLD RELIGION CLASSES will begin on Monday, Sept 10 from 6:30-8:30 P.M. and Wednesday, Sept. 12 from 9:30 – 11:30 A.M. The Wednesday morning class would work well for retirees, stay-at-home parents, anyone who would like to learn about the major religions of the world, how they are alike, how they are different, and how we might all work together and learn to live together. The Monday evening class is especially for those of you who work during the days and would like to learn in the same way. We can arrange child care for the class if you need it. Just call Nancy and let her know before the first class meets. To register for either of these classes, call Diana Faust at the church.
*
The piece Jeff H. and Pam F. sang for us on Sunday was extremely well-received. I remember when Jeff first mentioned the possibility an occasional infusing of classic music into our repertoire. My idea of “classic” is old rock songs; Jeff was talking about lyrics in Italian. I wasn’t sure how this was going to go over, but the music staff was enthusiastic. This is a music ministry geared to “let’s try it”—and forays such as yesterday’s offertory have gone over hugely well. One of the things I love about this congregation is the receptivity to diverse musical styles with the common denominator or excellence and energy.
*
Psalm 8:1-4, “O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger. When I look at your heavens, the work of your finers, the moon and the stars what you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them?”

Steppin' Up

THIS SUNDAY, August 26, IS STEPPIN UP SUNDAY
Nancy Davis preaching: “JONAH WAS A MUGGLE”

CHILDREN’S DIRECTOR NETTA P. writes:
Special Thanks to all Sunday School Teachers/Helpers who are “Stepping Up” to lead our Children closer to Jesus this fall. This truly has been the best year, in my ministry at St. Andrew’s, in terms of people coming willingly to help in Children’s Ministries!! We have doubled our number of male leaders in the classrooms! This is always an excellent model for our young boys! We are ready to start on Steppin’ Up Sunday with 60 leaders in place and another 12 or so to come and join the Children’s Ministry team for Sunday School! Please say a prayer of thanks and encouragement that they will also grow spiritually on their adventure with Kids!
In the Spirit of Children! Netta

Steppin’ Up Sunday:
Reminder:

• Preschool children go directly to classrooms.

• Pre-Kind. – 5th grades go to Gym and look for your color of balloon that marks your class. See the Web or newsletter for details.

• Bring a blanket or chairs to eat your lunch on.

• If you haven’t purchased a meal ticket, please contact Margie immediately with a number.

*
BOB D. writes: I need all parents of youth grades 6th through 12th to meet me in the youth room this Sunday August 26 at 12:30pm. We will have a brief meeting about this years youth calendar. I will also have a very important parent volunteer sign up sheet for various activities.
*
This has been quite a week. There’s been all the normal church stuff, of course, including the endless detail that comes with leading a large volunteer organization. To say that focus has been difficult would be an understatement.
I have found myself, at times, wanting to shout in joy, “This is all well and good, but don’t you know Madeline has been born?” There’s a Christmas sermon in that thought.
*
UPCOMING WORSHIP CALENDAR
Sept. 2, Nancy preaching: “YOU’RE FIRED!”
Sept. 9, 8:00, Pastor Charlotte preaching: “RUNNING ON EMPTY.”

Here’s the drill: Participants will be divided into teams of approximately eight persons, gathered around tables in the Family Life Center. Bruce and Nancy will ask 100 questions in groupings of ten questions each. Each table will come up with a single answer to each question, record the answer. After each group of ten questions, the answer sheets will be gathered, and the scores will be tabulated and posted. Bruce and Nancy PROMISE to be intentional about coming up with multi-generational questions. It’s a cheap event, too: $5 in advance, $10 at the door. You even get snacks, and there are door prizes. Who could ask for anything more? Sign ups continue this Sunday. Look for the table in the Rotunda.
*
PASTOR CHARLOTTE asks: Prayers for Mason P., who is going through a difficult time.
*
Job 38:1-7, “Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: ‘Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy?”

Of course, I’m just walking on sunshine, going on 48-hours after the birth of Madeline Teissier Du Cros. When I was in France in January, Mary had just learned she was pregnant. I had flown into Paris, taken the train to Bordeaux, and then returned to Paris for the flight back to Omaha. One of my last stops was the ancient Madeline Church, just off the Champs Elysee, where I lit a candle for Mary and the baby. I shared that with Mary in an e-mail. Mary told me months ago that she and Remi had a name picked out; they weren’t going to tell anyone until the baby was born, but she was sure I would like it. I get choked up, remembering that small candle in the vast, dark cathedral, the simple prayer offered for my little girl and the seed of life within her that would become Madeline. She’s only two days old and Madeline has become one of the great loves of my life. I told you in Sunday’s mailing that Madeline was born about the time the congregation was singing, “This little light of mine,” in the third service. Nancy has altered the verse to, “This little Madeline, God’s going to let her shine.”

DISCIPLE LITE - JOHN

In the very first chapter of John’s Gospel, Jesus issues two invitations: “Come and see,” and “Follow me.” They echo the invitation of this study: to come and see this Jesus—to hear him speak, to see his signs—and to consider anew what it means to be his followers. Corey Rector will facilitate this class. The workbook costs $10.

JESUS THE ONE AND ONLY – A BETH MOORE STUDY
Beginning September 12 @ 7 p.m.
Can you imagine placing your feet in the sand beside Jesus, walking where He left footprints, hearing Him actually speak? Come along with Beth Moore on a life-changing journey which will lead you through the hills of Galilee with the Teacher, across the lake with the Master, and, finally, on the road with the Savior—His face set toward the cross. This 12-week study includes personal, daily assignments and weekly group sessions. The workbook is $15, and Deb Richey will be facilitating this study.

If interested, contact BOB R.

TRIVIA NIGHT: Our next TRIVIA NIGHT is scheduled for Friday evening, September 14. We’ll start at 7:00. Child care will be offered. Sign ups begin this Sunday. Look for the table in the Rotunda.

I Corinthians 13:1-3: "If I speak in tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”

The Mission

THIS SUNDAY
August 5, 2007
8:00, 9:15 & 10:45

We’re going to talk about where St. Andrew’s is going and the roads that are going to take us there. We’ll share the sacrament of communion. Adam W. will bring us an offertory piece. There’s a sing-a-long component to this sermon (“Heart Of Worship,” “Lord I Want To Be A Christian,” “He Has Made Me Glad,” “If I Had A Hammer,” “Come On In” included) and we need you to make it work!

FROM JIM M.: “This Sunday’s Ministry Moment and the Communion Offering will be devoted to: Habitat For Humanity. The Mathew Ministry and the local Habitat Ecumenical Labor Force (ELF) Coalition, would like to thank St. Andrews for their continued support. Like Mathew, St. Andrew’s is dedicated to helping others through: sharing their time, skills, and generosity to touch the lives of people in our church and within the Omaha community. Thank you again for your support of Habitat for Humanity.”

ST. ANDREWS GIVES - BACK TO SCHOOL WEEK 3 UPDATE
Hello church family. We are on the home stretch. This is the last week of our drive. On Saturday August 11th, all of our wonderful donations will be delivered to our less fortunate children in the Omaha area. I can't thank you all enough for your generous donations. Let's end our drive with a real bang. Please bring your donations to the big red box in the rotunda on this our last Sunday, August 5th. Communion Sunday, what a wonderful way to celebrate communion together. Although we are still in need of any and all items on our list, we could especially use back packs. Fortunately they are on sale at all Walgreens stores, buy one for $9.99 and get another one for $1.00. For all of our needed items this is an excellent time to take advantage of all those wonderful back to school sales out there now at all your favorite stores. We'll look for you in church this Sunday, God Bless.
Sponsored by the circles of St. Andrews; Charity, Faith, Harmony, Patience and Hope.

JOYCE M. tells us: There is a phrase among Handbell ringers of a "Frazzled Lady with two bells in her hands saying: You Want Me To Do What With These? As the handbell director at St. Andrews I would like to show curious and interested members how to ring bells and not be a frazzled ringer. We are offering an OPEN RING for three weeks in August on Wednesday nights from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The OPEN RING is for current ringers, past ringers, "I would like to try ringers" and youth from middle school through high school. There is no commitment to join the current choir; just the opportunity to come ring and see what handbell ringing is really all about. If you are wondering if you need to be a great musician, the answer is: if helps but not necessary. It is my job to teach you how to ring and read music and we have great ringer mentors. Come join us!!! The dates are August 15th, 22nd and 29th from 5:30 to 6:30. The current adult choir will be rehearsing this fall on Wednesday nights rather than Monday as we have in the past. Questions????? Contact me either by phone or email.

Acts 14:8-12, “In Lystra there was a man sitting who could not use his feet and had never walked, for he had been crippled from birth. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. And Paul, looking at him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed, said in a loud voice, ‘Stand upright on your feet.’ And the man sprang up and began to walk. When the crowds saw what Paul had one, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, ‘The gods have come down to us in human form!’ Branabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.”

That’s one of the texts we’ll be referencing on Sunday. Hope to see you then.
God bless, BRD
