Marie Antoinette

Dear Saints Of Andrew:

We welcome a BUNCH of new readers to A-MAIL. If you ever want off the list, just let us know.

THIS SUNDAY

ALL SAINTS SUNDAY
Nancy Davis preaching:
"FOR ALL THE SAINTS"
*
Also this Sunday evening, at 6:00, we‚re holding a TOWN HALL MEETING to share dreams and visions for our MATTHEW MINISTRIES˜-the general heading for our congregation‚s ministry to the people Jesus was so concerned about in Matthew 25, including the poor, the hungry, the homeless. Your presence and input would be valued.
*
After several weeks of watching a lot of baseball, when Nancy and I went to the movies Saturday, it seemed right and good to defer to her choice of films, which is how we wound up at MARIE ANTOINETTE. From the first musical notes of the opening credits, I realized this was not going to be a traditional take on the French queen. I suppose it falls into the "artsy" category. That said, the photography and sets were amazing and Kirsten Dunst is a wonderful actress.

There is a great moment in the film when young Marie is stepping across Austrian soil into French territory. She is to leave all things Austrian behind. Looking ahead to this weekend's football game, be assured I have left any Missouri University allegiances behind me and will be pulling for the home team. Tough loss on Saturday, huh!
*
We're currently transitioning between web and e-mail providers. As I understand it, the web site will be receiving a total overhaul. Until the transition is complete, we won't know day to day just where we are with e-mail. If you've e-mailed me something and I haven't responded, it may be lost in cyberspace. We'll thank you for your patience.
*
It's personally important to me that I know peoples‚ names. I may butcher yours and whenever I get it wrong, please correct me. If I am NOT calling you by name, do me a favor, would you? Grab me by the sleeve and either introduce yourself or refresh my memory. Chances are I'll pull our my digital camera and take your picture. I appreciate your patience.

Karen B. is looking for an after school babysitter for her six year-old son. This person would need to pick him up at Cottonwood Elementary and watch him at her residence just two blocks away. Hours would be M T TH F from 3:30 to 5:30 and on Wed. from 2:00 to 5:30. Pay is negotiable. Please call Karen if you are interested.
*
As people share their e-addresses on Sunday morning, we add them to the list. We get some very positive feedback, including letters from out of town visitors like this one:

"I would just like to say what a growing, active, wonderful church you have... I love to visit when I come to visit my sister... The speakers and the music, and such great community involvement are so inspirational... I know this church means a great deal to my sister... We were saved when we were teenagers in West Virginia, but with the life we had at home, it is amazing how we ended up with anything positive. God was always there for me. I will never feel deserving enough for the times he has stood by me. I live in a small town and since my husband and I divorced and I am remarried...well let's just say it was not pretty. I have been to church 4 or 5 times since my divorce 4-5 years ago. After being (at St. Andrew‚s) a few weeks ago and hearing the song "Imagine Me" by Kirk Franklin, I was very moved. I went out and bought the CD, and last week swallowed my fear and attended a new church (in my hometown). I pray probably daily, but you cannot replace the support of a great Christian family. I just wanted you to know what a wonderful thing you have going, and that it means the world to some of your parishioners and their distant relatives ˆthanks.‰"

REVEREND CHARLOTTE asks: Prayers for Pearl O., receiving radiation treatments for comfort (Pastor Charlotte's friend). Prayers for Mallory D., preparing for surgery on November 6th (daughter of Bob and Tammy D.). Prayers for Rev. Bill M., recovering from surgery (former member of St. Andrew's; friend of Sheridan M.). Prayers for Denise J.'s Aunt Carol, whose cancer has appeared in five places; chemotherapy has been discontinued.
*
Psalm103:1-5, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits˜who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good as long as you live so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's."

Return Those Surveys

Dear Saints Of Andrew:
E-mail at St. Andrew’s was off-line, yesterday. I’m at Panera’s this morning and we seem to be back on-line. So I’ll try this.
*
The PASTOR CHARLOTTE CAMPAIGN begins tomorrow. This is our pledge campaign to support the 2007 budget. You’ll be receiving a letter from the church next week, telling you more about the process. What you’ll see this Sunday is the first in a series of three video clips in which Reverend Charlotte Mallott shares her passion for Gracious Generosity. I should add that the initiator has been yours truly, Bruce R. Davis. Charlotte is the teacher in this school, I’m the administrator ? I count it a blessing to have worked with Charlotte in this production. I find her outright inspiring and trust you will, too. I would add that the technical work of videotaping and editing is a gift from Craig S. and Mark Van K.

THIS SUNDAYOctober 29, 2006 The Time Change Sunday Special:Bruce Davis & The Julliards:“AT THE BALLET” Mark 10:13-16
*
One of the reasons I love baseball is that a 5’ 7” guy who wouldn’t look imposing in church softball can be the World Series MVP.
*
Switching sports, yesterday’s World-Herald “Voices From The Grandstand” featured a letter from “Texas grad” Tracy C. Tracy and his wife Karen are members of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church, Class of 2006. Well said, Tracy.
*
Children’s Director NETTA P. tells us: HEROES UNMASKED was a great success due to all our volunteers! Thanks to all who helped set up, run booths, cook in the kitchen and all other duties. We had 150 kids participate, 20+ youth volunteer and many parents participate with their kids. I estimate we had about 450+ people here learning about the Bible Heroes through fun and games. What a great way to “Share the Gospel of Jesus Christ” through this Halloween Alternative. We’ll definitely look at doing this again next year!
*
Writing for the Administrative Council, JOYCE C. asks: Please return your completed surveys to the church by Sunday (this weekend) so that the information from your survey can be included in the report. Thank you for your participation. We value your input. This Bruce again: There were suggestions about circulating the survey via A-Mail, but the software of this mailing program doesn’t seem to support that. So, I hope you received a copy via THE PASSAGE; if not, we’ll have them available this Sunday.
*
Speaking of A-Mail, I thought you might enjoy seeing this message received yesterday: "Pastor Bruce, Thank you so much for continuing to send me emails about your church. I was a visitor from Universal City United Methodist Church in San Antonio, TX. I went to visit my fiancé who just moved across the street into Torrey Pines apt. I absolutely love your church. To this day I talk wonderful things about my experience there. If my future husband continues in Omaha I will surely continue to assist the church. It is just so wonderful!!!"
*
I hope to see you tomorrow morning for “AT THE BALLET.” A lot of people have put a lot of work into this and we look forward to sharing it with you.
God bless, BRD

Auction Addendum

As you enter the Rotunda Sunday morning you will no doubt notice the beautiful new hot tub, one of the many cool oral auction items for the St Andrews Dinner Auction, November 17, 2006 to be held at Champions Run Country Club. This year’s theme is “A Night at the Oscars” and as the name suggests it is sure to be a gala event. While we certainly have glitzy items for the auction such as the hot tub, I have been even more impressed with the type of donations that have arrived this week. I asked each of you in the service this past Sunday to ask where the Lord is leading you, maybe it is to help with the dinner auction or maybe it’s to lend your talents in other areas of St Andrews. People are donating items that are truly giving of themselves, heartfelt donations that may not be as glamorous as our Hollywood theme but add so much value to the auction. THANK YOU!

If you are still considering what you can do, we have 10 days left to receive donations, so please bring your donations and donation write ups with you this Sunday.

This Sunday is the last day to turn in items for the Sunday school baskets. Please have your child bring an item of $5 to $10 that fits their theme or you can donate cash and we will do the shopping.

Have you bought your tickets for the auction, have you invited any friends? Tickets will be on sale in the Rotunda. We can have the largest dinner auction crowd ever but not with out your help.

Regards,

Greg T.

Stem cells are much in the news. I’m no scientist. I don’t have anything to add to the scientific debate. I don’t pretend to know God’s will on the subject. It’s been said, accurately, I suppose, that your perspective on stem cells probably has a lot to do with your own personal experience. My personal experience includes ministry with a number of parishioners over the years who were afflicted with the disease. I am particularly mindful of a particularly dear young woman, mother of four small children, who was struck by the same early-onset Parkinson’s that has afflicted Michael J. Fox. It was personally hurtful to me to see film clips of Rush Limbaugh mimicking Mr. Fox, implying he was faking his disease. In the controversial ad, Mr. Fox in fact exhibited the same symptoms I have seen in parishioners with the same disease. If you want to take issue with the science, that’s certainly fair. If you want to take issue with the timing and content of the political ad, that’s fair. Mr. Fox has no monopoly on the issue; nor neither does the Roman Catholic Church and athletes such as Kurt Warner and Jeff Suppan, or, for that matter, preachers like Bruce Davis. Neither political party has a monopoly on the issue. This is America. We all weigh in and then make our choices. But in any human endeavor, including political discourse, there has to be an out-bounds-line somewhere, and mocking people with Parkinson’s strikes me as beyond the pale. If you want to know more about Parkinson’s Disease, I’d be happy to put in orders with Sandi Gordon for copies of her book, “Smiles From The Heart.” The origin of the title is interesting. The disease made it physically impossible for Sandi to form her facial muscles into a smile. One of her children, as I remember, said, “But Mommy, you smile from your heart.”

PASTOR CHARLOTTE writes:
SOMETHING NEW ON THE WAY --
Beginning Sunday, November 12, 2006, you are invited to stop by the Prayer Chapel and receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion, at a time of your choosing, between 8 a.m. and 12 noon. This will be available every Sunday, thereafter, EXCEPT the first Sunday of each month, when Communion will be served at each of the 3 worship services. The bread and cup will have been consecrated prior to your arrival – this will be a time for you to commune with God, undisturbed, at your leisure. WHERE’S THE PRAYER CHAPEL, YOU ASK?! It is located across the hall from the back entrance to the main office. All are welcome.

Charlotte also asks: Prayers for our church, as we enter The Pastor Charlotte Campaign (so-named by Bruce D.); pray that we will hear God’s call to Gracious Generosity; that we will open our hearts and minds to receive God’s invitation to give of ourselves and our treasure – and in so doing be blessed. Prayers for Betty S., who is trying to avoid rejecting a kidney transplant and has experienced a mild heart attack (friend of Kevin & Deb N.). Prayers of sympathy for the family of Maria del Lourdes Alvarez A., in her recent passing; may she be welcomed into the Kingdom of God and rejoice (paternal aunt of Adrian A.). Prayers for Isabel B., who is at the hospital in St. Paul, MN, for a neurological check-up (daughter of Marc and Chris B.). Prayers for Andrea S., recovering from cancer surgery (friend of Margie W.). Prayers of sympathy for the family of Jeanette L., in her recent passing (aunt of Joanne C.). Prayers for Travis, who is struggling with life changes.

Occasionally, I'll run into a book that articulates what I've been thinking, but haven't been able to put into words myself. Former Missouri Republican Senator John Danforth, one of the finest men in America's public life, has written such a book: "FAITH AND POLITICS: How The ŒMoral Values‚ Debate Divides America And How To Move Forward Together." Faith and politics is not to be confused with religion and politics. Religion and politics is often divisive. Faith, however, operates from a starting-point of humility, and this, says Danforth, is the great gift Christianity has to offer America in our time. You‚ll certainly be hearing references to this book from the St. Andrew‚s pulpit and I urge you to find a copy for yourself and savor this good man's profound insights.

SURVEY NEWS. Mark Van K. writes: "The drop box for the St Andrews Church Surveys will be on the information table in the Big Round Room all this week, including next Sunday morning (October 29th). Extra copies of the survey will also be available. If you haven't already filled out a copy of the survey, please take a moment this week to do so. We need your opinions on how St Andrews can serve you and your families better. A special thanks goes to all those who turned in their surveys this past Sunday!"

Kenny Rogers = The Gambler = Dealing From The Bottom Of The Deck. It looked to me as if he just moved the pine tar from his left thumb to the bill of his cap. Not that I'd want anyone thinking St. Louis Cardinal fans are whiners. This is the Cardinals seventh World Series in my lifetime (Yes, Cubs fans, I do count by blessings), the others being 1964, 1967, 1968, 1982, 1985, 1987 & 2004. With the exception of the Boston debacle two years ago, I believe the previous six all went seven games. I wouldn't be surprised to see this one go the limit, as well. I should add that, under other circumstances, I'm a semi-Detroit Tigers fan. I've been in both the old and new Detroit ballparks. As much as I initially resented the team for abandoning Tiger Stadium, there is much to like about Comerica. And their home uniforms, particularly the ball caps, are among the best in baseball.

Diana F. tells us of a series of PANEL DISCUSSIONS that should be of considerable interest to many in the congregation. Each session is on a Wednesday evening, 6:00, in Room Lower Level 4, with child care provided.
Nov. 1: SINGLE PARENTS. Come hear from a panel of St. Andrew's single parents as they share their experiences.
Nov. 8: BLENDED FAMILIES. A panel of St. Andrew‚s parents of blended families will share their experiences.
Nov. 15: FOSTER PARENTS. Ever thought about being a foster parent? Hear from St. Andrew's members who are. Learn about the process, and the many blessings foster parenting can bring.
For each of these sessions, you will have time to ask questions. As noted, child care is provided, but you must turn in a request to Judy in the church office.
*
PASTOR CHARLOTTE asks: Prayers for Rita H., who has been hospitalized; pray, also, for Brad, Megan and family (Brad H.'s‚ mother).Prayers for Jeanne M., as she journeys through her final days of lung cancer (mother of Lynne J.). Prayers for Mark V., who has sustained a back injury on the job (son of Mickey V.). Prayers for Maria del Lourdes Alvarez A., who is terminally ill and has been moved to hospice; pray that she be pain free and peaceful as she journeys through her final days (paternal aunt of Adrian A.).

Mark 10:13-16
People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them: "Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it." And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

One Night in October

Dear Saints Of Andrew:
THIS SUNDAYOctober 22, 2006 Nancy & Bruce: "DARKNESS VISIBLE”A Sermon On Depression. It’s Gonna Be A Bright, Bright, Sun Shiny Day!
*
Last night reminded me why I like baseball so much. It is, I believe, the sport that most closely mirrors life experience. The teams play every day, grinding out the season one game at a time. The exhilarating victory of one day may be followed by a crushing defeat the next, and if you let yourself get too high or too low, you’re burned out by mid-season. The sport puts a premium on the very Biblical value of endurance. Baseball is a team game where every individual gets his turn at the plate. Even the best hitters fail more often than they succeed. Managers know they are going to be mercilessly second-guessed, even by the team’s biggest fans. (Note to leaders in any field: Tony LaRussa’s “Three Nights In August” should be on your reading list.) Any single game may have long stretches of boredom, only to quickly turn to genuine suspense. And when the bases are loaded with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, 57,000 New York fans on their feet, Carlos Beltran at the plate, the Cardinal rookie right-hander has to garner his courage and throw the ball. Wow.
*
We’re nine days away from the 2006 Time Change Sunday Special: “AT THE BALLET,” featuring members of the St. Andrew's Drama and Music Ministries.
*
DEB H. WRITES: I don't know if it is something that you would want to cover in an A-mail or not, but we just saw one of the most wonderful movies titled "Facing the Giants". I know that you have probably already heard of it, it is a movie about a high-school football coach that is facing hardships with the football team, their performance and commitment, and the possibility of being forced out by the fathers of some of these players. He also is facing some personal challenges the most important being told he is the reason he and his wife can not have children. The story line changes to where he has a wonderful seen where with an open bible, he is asking God for help. Through some self awareness, he decides to take on a new philosophy with his team and asks his athletes why they are playing football. As a team they decide to give all of their efforts and win or lose they will praise God. It is a neat little movie with no big name actors and probably no Academy Award winning performances; however, it is a movie that we could take our 8 and 5 year old sons to and feel that they learned some valuable "life" lessons on how to be a humble young man, an athlete, a friend and most importantly a Christian. I would love if you could ask our church family to support the 20 Grand in featuring this movie. It is currently 15th (I believe) nationwide and I am excited about that!!
*
PASTOR CHARLOTTE asks: Prayers of thanksgiving for Richard N., who has received a liver transplant; pray for ongoing healing. (Dee H.’s brother). Prayers of sympathy for the family of Martha W., in her recent passing (grandmother of Jeff W. and Wendy B.). Prayers of thanksgiving for Shirley R., whose lung cancer is in remission; pray for remission to continue (mother of Michael R., mother-in-law of Sandra R.). Prayers for Dani W., recently diagnosed with cancer (friend of Samantha M.).

Nehemiah 9:6, “And Ezra said, ‘You are the Lord, you alone; you have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. To all of them you give life, and the host of heaven worships you. You are the Lord, the God who chose Abram and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans and gave him the name Abraham; and you found his heart faithful before you, and made with him a covenant to give to his descendents the land of the Canannite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, and you have fulfilled your promise, for your are righteous.” Comment: While I doubt the Girgashites would have appreciated Ezra's sense of manifest destiny, Ezra praises the Lord as a fulfiller of promises, for the Lord is righteous. I think of the line from the great hymn, "The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures; he will my shield and portion be, as long as life endures." I invite you to trust the good promises of the Lord.

Box Sets & Beat Texas

Dear Saints Of Andrew:

THIS SUNDAY
October 22, 2006
Nancy & Bruce:
"DARKNESS VISIBLE"
A Sermon On Depression.
*
Be watching your mail box for this month's PASSAGE. Inside you'll find a survey sheet, with this introductory paragraph: "As St. Andrew's continues to grow and plan for the future, your input is encouraged so that we can work collectively to accomplish our mission. With this information, we will focus on continuing core strengths and identifying areas in which we need to grow. Please take a moment and prayerfully complete this survey and return it to the survey box in the Rotunda. God bless and thank you. The St. Andrew's Administrative Council."

I've got the songs more or less selected for my 100 GREATEST HITS OF ALL TIME--to be auctioned off on November 17. It's going to be a six disc collection. The disc packaging itself is easy enough; Steve Groves is helping with that. But if I'm going to put the six discs into a box set, what do I do for a box? Any ideas?
*
I always like to do something special for Time Change Sunday, which falls this year on October 29. Last year, we did THE JOHNNY CASH SERMON. This year, members of our Drama and Music Ministries will join me in offering a sermon titled, "AT THE BALLET."
*
While my sporting energy has been directed toward the baseball playoffs, please know I will be rooting big for the Huskers this weekend. You may not know this, but for organizational purposes, the United Methodist Church in these United States is divided into what are called Jurisdictions. Nebraska is the northernmost component in the South Central Jurisdiction, which covers most of the Big XII Conference. Like the Big XII, the South Central Jurisdiction is dominated by Texas Methodism. Texas Methodists (with the exception of our own Bishop Sherer, herself a Texan, but an otherwise delightful human being) might have you believe the Methodist Church doesn't extend north of the Red River. So let's burn the orange and give our brothers and sisters in the Lone State a much needed lesson in humility.
*
Single Parents, Blended Families, and Foster Parents
Are you one? Do you know someone who is? Would you like to learn more? Maybe start a support group? An opportunity for you to learn more is coming in November. The Adult Discipling Ministries Team is sponsoring panel discussions as follows:
November 1 ˆ Singles Parents
November 8 ˆ Blended Families
November 15 ˆ Foster Parenting
Members of St. Andrew's will serve as a panel to share their experience and answer any questions you might have. All presentations will begin at 6 p.m. in Room Lower Level 4.

*
ADVENT DEVOTIONAL BOOK. Pastor Nancy is putting together a book of Advent devotions ˆ one each day from the first Sunday in Advent (December 3) through January 1. She and her committee are asking members and friends of St. Andrew's UMC to submit items for the book. Items for submission can be original writings or something written by someone else (please include name of author so we can give credit). These items do not all have to have a Christmas theme but we will need a few of those for the days closest to Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Submissions could be: reflections on a favorite scripture; memories of a past Christmas; or a poem or writing that has been special to you authored by someone else. Please include your name on your submission as we want those who read them to know who made that selection for the book. Submissions can be e-mailed to Nancy or brought to the church office. Deadline for submission is Monday, November 20. The books will be available for pick-up (one per family please) on December 3. If you have questions, contact Nancy.
*
CHERI S. writes: Just a reminder that the Sunday school classes are collecting donations to be used for our church auction. We are putting together baskets using the following themes; baby items, baby toys, Dora, dinosaurs, Hot Wheels, Veggie Tales, Barbies, crafts, primary books, Legos, sporting items, DVD's for elementary aged children, games, puzzles or books for 5th/6th graders, dinner or movie gift certificates and car care items. If you are willing to donate any of these items please place them in the black donation boxes located around the church on Sunday mornings. We truly appreciate all your support to make our auction a success!

Matthew Ministries invites you to attend
A TOWN HALL MEETING
Sunday evening, November 5, 6:00
The Lower Level Music Room
If you have no idea what this refers to, please check out the Bruce Davis sermon, "CONSIDERING THE POOR," on the St. Andrew's web site: www.standrewsomaha.net.

SAMANTHA M. writes: I would like to add Dani W. to the prayer list. She was recently diagnosed with cervical cancer. She is a dear friend of mine who is 29.

Lamentations 1:4, 12, "The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to her festivals; all her gates are desolate, her priests groan; her young girls grieve, and her lot is bitter∑ Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look and see if there is any sorrow like my sorrow." Lamentations 1:4, 12

Box Sets & Beat Texas

Dear Saints Of Andrew:

THIS SUNDAY
October 22, 2006
Nancy & Bruce:
"DARKNESS VISIBLE"
A Sermon On Depression.

Single Parents, Blended Families, and Foster Parents
Are you one? Do you know someone who is? Would you like to learn more? Maybe start a support group? An opportunity for you to learn more is coming in November. The Adult Discipling Ministries Team is sponsoring panel discussions as follows:
November 1 ˆ Singles Parents
November 8 ˆ Blended Families
November 15 ˆ Foster Parenting
Members of St. Andrew's will serve as a panel to share their experience and answer any questions you might have. All presentations will begin at 6 p.m. in Room Lower Level 4.

PASTOR CHARLOTTE asks: Prayers for Madison M., preparing for surgery on October 17th (9 year old daughter of Mark and Stacy M.). Prayers for Brittany W., who is in ICU in a hospital in Denver, Colorado, with brain damage due to a recent automobile accident (granddaughter of Doris A.). Prayers of sympathy for the family of Rita S., in her recent passing (mother of Dr. John L.).
*
ALSO FROM CHARLOTTE: Some folk are asking, "WHERE IS THE PRAYER CHAPEL?" It is located directly across the hall from the back entrance to the main office. It is open when the building is unlocked. You are invited to stop by, sit down and commune with God, as often as you wish.

DO YOU HAVE MILITARY PERSONNEL IN YOUR FAMILY? If so, we are wanting to gather a collection of pictures of those service men and women, specifically to display for our congregation to come to know and to remember in prayer. Please get your pictures to Pastor Charlotte soon. Thank you!

TEE IT UP FOR NICK, October 22nd at Pacific Springs Golf Club. Nick F. was a happy, healthy, normal 2 year-old when, in 2003 he contracted Ecoli, which brought on multiple cardiac arrests, resulting in a severe brain injury. Over the past 3 years, he has shown some improvement, through therapy. Progress is slow and costly, however. The Fritch family relate to our church and we extend the ministry of Pastoral Care to them offering our support as they walk this path.

PAT M. writes:

The 10th Annual Harvest Boutique was a wonderful success. We had over 1,500 people visit our church and over 50 members of the church volunteered to work on Friday and Saturday. We want to thank each and everyone for their time and contributions.

The bake sale and cookie corner was a huge success. Profit from the bake sale was $785 and $275 from the cookie corner. (At $.25 each that would be 1,100 cookies!) Our Harvest Café sells the best Chicken Salad Croissants and Sloppy Joes and the profit from the café was $2,000. Total profit from the Boutique was $8,000. In the past the profit has been split 25% to world missions, 25% to local missions and 50% remaining at St. Andrew's. Again, thanks to all who donated money, baked goods, and their time to the success of our Boutique.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all of the Campbell Soup labels that have been collected over the years on behalf of Epworth Village. It occurred to me that there might be some people that are unaware of this project.

Epworth Village, located in York NE, serves males from ages 7 to 18 with severe emotional and behavioral disorders. The overall program consists of family-centered, residential/day treatment and is delivered through the Epworth Village Learning Center, therapy department, healthcare staff, Life Skills Trainers, Spiritual Life Coordinator and a host of dedicated administrative, maintenance and food services employees.

The collected labels are taken to regional UMW (United Methodist Women) meetings. From there they are taken to Epworth Village where a dedicated group of people coordinate the completion of the process. Through these efforts, Epworth Village has just completed the purchase of their third van! Some of the money realized also goes for needed supplies.

ATTENTION ˆ Everyone who is saving Campbell's labels ˆ There is a NEW way to submit Campbell Labels. The only thing we need from the labels is the UPC! Campbell's will not accept anything but the UPC. Please spread the word. FRONT PANEL PRODUCT LABELS WILL NO LONGER BE ACCEPTED. If in doubt, save the whole label. There is a box (the one with the yellow bus on top) in the Ministry Kiosk to deposit your UPC's.

Psalm 22:1-5, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning? O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer; and by night I find no rest. Yet you are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. In you our ancestors trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. To you they cried, and were saved; in you they trusted, and were not put to shame." Psalm 22:1-5

We're Dead, Come On In

Dear Saints of Andrew:

If you get on the web, enter Springfield News Leader (that's Springfield, Missouri), or News-Leader.com. The online edition for this Sunday morning is headlined with a story about the Young Brothers Massacre of 1932, subject of my book "We're Dead, Come On In." (Last time I looked there were copies on the True Crime shelf at our local Borders. As my royalties are going to the St. Andrew's Capital Campaign, I have no ethical problem with that self-promotion.) Hope to see you later this morning. It's going to be a fine day at St. Andrew's UMC. BRD

Ephesians 4:1-6, “I therefore, the prisoner in the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all."

I understand the convention wisdom is that the Mets will thump up on the Cardinals, but I look at the Mets pitching, with injuries to Pedro Martinez and others, and wonder why. Hey, the Mets have been reduced to starting ex-Cub Steve Trachsel! I'm much more hopeful of the Cardinals reaching the World Series than of this epistle reaching AOL customers.

Parents of Third Graders:

LAST CHANCE TO ORDER AN IMPRINTED BIBLE FOR YOUR 3RD GRADER!!

October 22nd is Bible Sunday for all Third Graders.

It is our pleasure and privilege to present all third graders with their own Bible imprinted with their name each year. We have sent two emails, a postcard and one previous A-Mail reminder about this but still have only received a small portion of responses back. We want to be sure that your child is recognized on Oct. 22nd with their imprinted Bible. We cannot do this without your input!

Friday, Oct. 6th at NOON is the final call for the exact spelling and way in which you want your child's Bible printed. We will order a few non-imprinted Bibles, however, if we do not receive any communication from you, your child may receive a Bible without their name imprinted or may not receive one at all on Oct. 22nd if we run out.

Please email Margie by FRIDAY NOON with the way you want your child's Bible to be printed.

Thanks!

I try to schedule something special for the last Sunday in October: Time Change Sunday. A year ago, that was "Johnny Cash". This year, concurrent with the Broadway revival of one of my favorite musicals, "A Chorus Line", I'm planning "At The Ballet" for October 29. I promise not to dance.

I'm not saying my St. Louis Cardinals will make the World Series, but if I was a betting man, I wouldn't bet against them. I know this, for all the floundering at the end of the season, El Birdos have got a lot better chance than the Cubs and Astros! :)

I surely loved that anthem on Sunday. If you didn't hear Adam Witte's story about "It Is Well With My Soul", I've summarized it on the web page: www.standrewsomaha.net. I've also posted a picture I took, of the church at sunset that I hope you'll like. I would also thank the Bell Choir for their fine work at all three services.

Proverbs 15:1-5, "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise dispenses knowledge, but the mouths of fools pour out folly. The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good. A gentle tongue is a tree of live, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit. A fool despises a parent's instruction, but the one who heeds admonition is prudent."
